Bulgaria – from World Cup glory to the fight for a return

Bulgaria is positioned around the end of the third ten in the UEFA country ranking. It is surrounded in the standings by Slovakia, Azerbaijan, Slovenia and Israel. This is a position typical of a mid-level European league: Bulgarian clubs can regularly compete in European competitions, but usually have to begin their campaigns in the qualifying rounds.

In recent seasons, Bulgaria has earned points primarily thanks to Ludogorets Razgrad. Other clubs – Levski Sofia, CSKA Sofia, CSKA 1948, Botev Plovdiv and Cherno More Varna – have contributed smaller portions of the total. The main problem therefore remains the uneven level of the country's representatives and the ranking's dependence on a single club.

Ludogorets – the main source of points

Ludogorets Razgrad is currently by far the most important Bulgarian club in European competitions. In the five-year UEFA club ranking, it is positioned significantly higher than its domestic rivals, and its coefficient has been the foundation of Bulgaria's position for many years.

The club from the small city of Razgrad has gone from a regional team to a dominant force in Bulgarian football in a relatively short period. It regularly wins the domestic championship and almost every season competes for a place in the league phase of the Champions League, Europa League or Conference League.

Ludogorets have appeared in the group or league phases of European competitions on numerous occasions. Their greatest strength is consistency: even when they fail to reach the Champions League, the club often moves into the Europa League or Conference League, where it has a greater chance of recording victories and earning additional points.

The scale of the city from which the club comes is particularly notable. Razgrad is not a major metropolis, yet Ludogorets have built the infrastructure, academy and budget needed to compete with teams from much larger urban centres.

Sofia and the historic clubs

The biggest traditional clubs in Bulgaria are Levski Sofia and CSKA Sofia. Both have rich histories, large fan bases and an important place in the country's sporting culture.

Levski is one of the most popular clubs in the capital. Its matches have a strong social dimension, while its supporters are known for spectacular displays and passionate chanting. The club has competed in European competitions since their early decades, facing teams such as Barcelona, Liverpool and other European giants.

CSKA Sofia have reached the European Cup semi-finals. The Bulgarian club reached the last four on two occasions in the 1970s. On both occasions, their run was ended by Dutch opponents – Ajax and Bayern Munich. It was the greatest period in CSKA's history and one of the most outstanding achievements in Bulgarian club football.

Today, however, Levski and CSKA cannot consistently match Ludogorets in organisational and sporting terms. Their European campaigns are more inconsistent, and reaching a league phase remains an achievement rather than an annual expectation.

Bulgarian football in the UEFA ranking

Bulgaria is positioned around 30th place, but its coefficient is heavily concentrated around Ludogorets. In the seasons under review, the Razgrad club earned significantly more points than Levski, CSKA Sofia or CSKA 1948.

This situation has both advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is that Ludogorets are an experienced team, usually well seeded and capable of progressing regularly. The disadvantage is the lack of sufficient support from the other clubs. If Ludogorets are eliminated early, Bulgaria loses its main source of coefficient points.

To move up the ranking, Bulgaria needs more teams to progress through the qualifying rounds. Regular league-phase appearances by Levski and CSKA would be particularly important, as would successful campaigns by clubs from Plovdiv, Varna and other cities.

The national team that amazed the world

Bulgaria did indeed have a very strong national team in the past. Its greatest achievement came at the 1994 World Cup in the United States, where it reached the semi-finals and eventually finished fourth. This remains the best result in the history of the Bulgarian national team.

The leader of that team was Hristo Stoichkov, one of the greatest Bulgarian footballers in history. The forward scored numerous goals, won the Ballon d'Or and became the symbol of a generation that combined technical ability, temperament and an uncompromising style of play.

The Bulgarians became particularly famous for their victory over Germany in the World Cup quarter-finals. The defending champions took the lead after half-time, but Bulgaria turned the match around through goals from Hristo Stoichkov and Yordan Letchkov. Letchkov's headed goal became one of the most memorable moments in the history of Bulgarian sport.

Bulgaria lost to Italy in the semi-finals and then to Sweden in the third-place play-off. Nevertheless, fourth place was a tremendous achievement. The national team had defeated Argentina, Mexico and Germany during the tournament, while its attacking style attracted attention from football fans around the world.

The golden generation and its heroes

The 1994 team was exceptional not only because of Stoichkov. Other key players included Emil Kostadinov, Yordan Letchkov, Krasimir Balakov, Luboslav Penev and goalkeeper Borislav Mihaylov.

Kostadinov had already made history by scoring decisive goals in the World Cup qualifiers. Letchkov became one of Bulgaria's most recognisable players after the tournament in the United States. Balakov was a creative midfielder who later enjoyed success in the German Bundesliga.

Bulgarian football had also achieved success earlier. The national team won the silver medal at the 1968 Olympic tournament and, in other eras, regularly qualified for the World Cup. However, the 1994 tournament in the United States remains the event most closely associated with Bulgarian football.

Why did things get worse afterwards?

After the golden generation ended their careers, Bulgaria was unable to build another team of comparable strength. Individual talented players continued to emerge, but there was no longer a group of footballers with a similar level of quality and international experience.

The problems involved youth development, infrastructure, club finances and the organisation of competitions. The best young players increasingly moved abroad at an early stage of their careers, while domestic clubs were not always able to provide them with the right conditions for development.

Bulgaria have not qualified for the World Cup since the 1998 tournament. The national team has also failed to qualify for the European Championship since the beginning of the 21st century. The contrast between the country's historic achievements and its current situation is therefore very clear.

Vasil Levski National Stadium

The most important stadium in Bulgaria is the Vasil Levski National Stadium in Sofia. The venue is named after a hero of the Bulgarian national liberation movement and serves as the main home ground of the national team.

The stadium is located in the centre of the capital, near Borisova Gradina Park. Its location makes national team matches an important part of life in Sofia, while supporters can easily reach the stadium by public transport.

In Bulgaria, stadiums are often closely connected with political and national history. The names of venues commemorate heroes of the struggle for independence, sporting figures and events that are important to the country's national identity.

Football in the Balkans

Bulgarian football has a typically Balkan character. Emotions, fan rivalries and local pride play an important role in league matches. The games between Levski and CSKA are among the most important derbies in the region, and their significance goes beyond the league table.

At the same time, Bulgarian clubs have to compete with teams from Türkiye, Greece, Serbia, Croatia and Romania. Many of these countries face similar challenges: limited budgets, an outflow of talent and dependence on several wealthier clubs.

Prospects for Bulgaria

Bulgaria has a rich national team and club history, but its current position in European football relies primarily on Ludogorets. The Razgrad club regularly earns points and keeps the country around the end of the third ten in the UEFA ranking.

Levski and CSKA still have the strongest traditions and fan bases, but they need to improve their management and results in qualifying rounds. Without regular progress through the later stages, Bulgaria will struggle to move higher in the ranking.

Bulgaria remains a country with a significant football heritage. CSKA's semi-final appearances, Levski's European campaigns, Ludogorets' successes and, above all, the fourth-place finish at the 1994 World Cup demonstrate that the potential is there. The biggest challenge is turning the country's historic traditions and talent into stable results for its modern clubs and national team.
