OFI Crete FC (Omilos Filathlon Irakleiou) stands as the undisputed flagship institution of Cretan sports, serving as a beacon of regional identity for the island and its capital, Heraklion. Founded in the autumn of 1925 by a collective of local athletes inside a Heraklion gymnasium, the club adopted its signature black-and-white colours—a striking aesthetic choice designed to contrast with the ubiquitous blue and white of mainland Greek athletics. The club's culture is rooted in intense island pride, fostering a fiercely passionate atmosphere that sets it apart from the mainland clubs of Athens and Thessaloniki.

The home and traditional stronghold of the team is the iconic venue widely known by its historical moniker Yenti Kule, officially named the Theodoros Vardinogiannis Stadium. Located in the Kaminia district and opened in 1951, the compact stadium is famous across Greece for its tight, intimidating surroundings. The golden era of OFI Crete unfolded under the tenure of Dutch manager Eugène Gerards, who led the technical side from 1985 to 2000, becoming the longest-serving foreign manager in Greek top-flight history. Under his leadership, OFI captured its greatest major honor by winning the Greek Cup in 1987, defeating Iraklis in the final on penalties, after having finished as Super League runners-up in the 1985–86 season. Iconic figures who defined the club's history include Chilean playmaker Jaime Vera, Cyprus-born midfielder Nikos Nioplias, goalkeeper Nikos Sargkanis, and forward Giannis Samaras.

In European competitions, OFI Crete etched a memorable chapter during the 1993–94 UEFA Cup campaign. After eliminating Slavia Prague, the Cretan side faced Spanish powerhouses Atlético Madrid in the second round. Following a narrow 1–0 defeat in Madrid, OFI produced a monumental 2–0 victory in the return leg at Yenti Kule thanks to goals from Nikos Nioplias and Orestis Alexandrou, knocking Atlético out to reach the last 16. This victory remains one of the most famous continental upsets in Greek football history. The club also lifted the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2007.

Today, following a period of financial restructuring and ownership renewal in the 2010s, OFI Crete maintains a stable presence in the Greek Super League 1, anchoring its status as the premier representative of Crete in national football.
