Arsenal FC traces its origins to Dial Square, a works team founded in December 1886 by workers at the Royal Arsenal armaments factory in Woolwich — the source of both the club's nickname, the Gunners, and the cannon on its crest. After several name changes (Royal Arsenal, Woolwich Arsenal), the club joined the Football League in 1893 as the first southern English club to do so, before relocating to north London's Highbury stadium in 1913.

Arsenal have won 14 English league titles, including the 2025/26 Premier League crown secured under manager Mikel Arteta, which ended a 22-year wait for the championship. The club also holds a record 14 FA Cups and 2 League Cups. In European competition, Arsenal won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1994 and the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1970, and reached the 2006 UEFA Champions League final, where they lost to FC Barcelona.

The most celebrated chapter in the club's history was written by French manager Arsène Wenger, under whom the team went through the entire 2003/04 league season unbeaten, earning the nickname The Invincibles. Key figures of that side included Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Vieira, while earlier successes had been built by players such as Tony Adams and Ian Wright.

Since 2006, Arsenal have played their home matches at the Emirates Stadium (60,704 capacity), traditionally wearing red shirts with white sleeves. The club has long relied on graduates of its Hale End academy, among them Bukayo Saka.
