Real Madrid, founded on 6 March 1902, is one of the most successful and recognisable clubs in the history of world football. Widely known as Los Blancos ("The Whites") – a nickname that comes directly from the club's white playing kit, not from any royal title. That title was granted separately, in 1920, when the King of Spain, Alfonso XIII, officially bestowed on the club the name "Real" (Royal) and allowed a crown to be placed on its crest. The team's snow-white shirts were meant from the outset to symbolise purity, class and sporting honour, becoming over time a global synonym for footballing elegance.

The club's true power, however, is defined by its absolute dominance of the UEFA Champions League. Real Madrid is the most successful team in the history of the competition, having won fifteen European Cups since the tournament's inaugural 1955–56 edition, including a record five titles in a row between 1956 and 1960 and a further hat-trick of triumphs between 2016 and 2018. It was on these pitches that legends were made, and the club earned the title of undisputed king of continental cups.

One of the most important figures in the modern history of Real Madrid is Zinédine Zidane. The Frenchman first etched his name into fans' memory as a brilliant player, whose legendary volley in the 2002 Champions League final against Bayer Leverkusen secured the club's ninth European title. Years later, Zidane returned to the Santiago Bernabéu as a manager, achieving a historic feat by leading Los Blancos to three consecutive Champions League trophies (2016–2018), permanently cementing his status as an icon of Madrid's heritage.

Real Madrid play their home matches at the Santiago Bernabéu, opened in 1947 and named after the club president who drove its construction. Following a major renovation completed in the mid-2020s, the stadium now holds more than 83,000 spectators and remains one of the most recognisable football arenas in the world.
