Sevilla FC is a club whose history dates back to 25 January 1890, when a football team was established in Seville through the initiative of a group of British residents and local inhabitants. The club considers that date the beginning of its history, and on 8 March 1890 Sevilla took part in the first recorded football match played in Spain, defeating Huelva Recreation Club 2-0. Among the figures associated with the club's origins were Edward Farquharson Johnston, its first president, Hugo MacColl and Isaías White.
The first decades of Sevilla FC were closely connected with the development of football in Andalusia. The club collected regional honours before reaching Spain's top division for the first time in 1934. Its first major national trophy followed in 1935, when Sevilla won the Spanish Cup. Further victories came in 1939 and 1948, while the club's greatest league achievement remains the Spanish championship won in the 1945/46 season. Sevilla have won one Spanish league title and five Spanish Cups.
One of the most important figures in the club's history is Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, who served as president in two periods and began efforts to build a new stadium before the Second World War. After his death, the project was continued by Ramón de Carranza. The stadium opened in September 1958 and has remained Sevilla's home ever since. The first official match at the new ground was played on 21 September 1958 against Real Betis. The stadium was named in honour of Sánchez-Pizjuán, who did not live to see its completion. It later became one of the most recognisable grounds in Spanish football and hosted matches at the 1982 FIFA World Cup.
The defining chapter of Sevilla FC's modern history, however, has been written in European competition. Sevilla won the UEFA Cup in 2006 and 2007 before adding UEFA Europa League titles in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Further triumphs followed in 2020 and 2023, making Sevilla the most successful club in the history of the competition. Their seven UEFA Cup/Europa League titles are a record, and Sevilla have won every final they have played in the tournament.
One of the most memorable matches came in the 2023 Europa League final in Budapest against AS Roma. Sevilla fell behind to a goal from Paulo Dybala, but levelled through an own goal by Gianluca Mancini. The match remained 1-1 after extra time, before Sevilla won the penalty shoot-out 4-1. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was the hero after saving two penalties, while Gonzalo Montiel converted the decisive spot kick. It was Sevilla's seventh triumph in the competition.
Among the most important figures of the modern era is Jesús Navas, a Sevilla academy graduate and one of the most recognisable players in the club's history. He was part of the teams that won European trophies in 2006, 2007, 2020 and 2023. In the 2023 final against Roma he played at the age of 37, and shortly afterwards became the first player in history to win the FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championship and UEFA Nations League.
European success has become the defining feature of Sevilla FC's identity. The club's traditional colours are white and red, which are also closely associated with the city of Seville. Its distinctive crest, designed by Pablo Rodríguez in 1921, incorporates elements inspired by the city's coat of arms. Today, Sevilla remain one of Spain's most successful clubs in European competition, while the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán continues to be one of the defining symbols of football in Seville.
