For decades, Villarreal CF was a story of a club that repeatedly came agonisingly close to major European success before finally achieving it. The team from a town of under fifty thousand people in the province of Castellón was founded on 10 March 1923, adopting its yellow colours in the 1940s, which gave rise to the nickname the Yellow Submarine.

The most dramatic chapter in the club's history remains the 2006 Champions League semi-final, when Argentine playmaker Juan Román Riquelme missed a stoppage-time penalty against Arsenal that would have taken the tie to extra time and a place in the final. Sixteen years later, in 2022, Villarreal reached the semi-finals again, this time losing to Liverpool. The club also finished runner-up in La Liga in the 2007/08 season, managed at the time by Manuel Pellegrini.

It was not until 2021, under Unai Emery, that Villarreal won the first major trophy in its history: the UEFA Europa League, beating Manchester United in Gdańsk after an eleven-round penalty shootout in which only the opposing goalkeeper missed. Other club legends include forward Gerard Moreno, the team's all-time top scorer, and long-serving captain Bruno Soriano.

Home matches are played at the Estadio de la Cerámica, known for decades as El Madrigal, whose capacity of over 23,000 amounts to nearly half the town's population. Villarreal remains an example of a club that, through stable management and youth development, regularly competes with Spain's biggest sides.
