Manchester United FC traces its roots to Newton Heath LYR, a team formed in 1878 by workers from the Carriage and Wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway at Newton Heath. The earliest side played in green and gold, the colours of their railway employer, and were known as "the Railwaymen." The club was renamed Manchester United in 1902 and moved to Old Trafford in 1910, where it has played ever since.

The darkest chapter in the club's history is the Munich air disaster of 6 February 1958, in which 23 people died, including eight players from the young "Busby Babes" team built by Sir Matt Busby. The squad was returning from a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade. A decade later, in 1968, United won the European Cup for the first time.

A second great era arrived under Sir Alex Ferguson, who managed the club from 1986 to 2013 and turned it into the dominant force in English football, culminating in the historic treble of 1999 โ€” league, FA Cup and Champions League in a single season โ€” and a third European title in 2008. Old Trafford, known as the Theatre of Dreams, remains a symbol of that period. Manchester United have won 20 English league titles, a joint record shared with Liverpool.
