Paris Saint-Germain was founded in 1970 through the merger of Paris FC and Stade Saint-Germain. The club has won a record 14 French league titles (Ligue 1), 16 Coupe de France trophies and 9 League Cups — the most of any team in French football history. On the European stage, the Parisians lifted the Cup Winners' Cup in 1996, and in 2025 and 2026 they won back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles, becoming the first French club ever to do so.

The most memorable match in the club's history remains the Champions League final of 31 May 2025 in Munich, where PSG thrashed Inter Milan 5-0, the biggest winning margin ever recorded in a major European final. A year later, on 30 May 2026 in Budapest, the team defended the title, beating Arsenal on penalties after a 1-1 draw. A defining turning point came in 2011, when Qatar Sports Investments acquired the club, ushering in an era of domestic dominance.

The club's shirt has been worn by players such as Zlatan Ibrahimović, Edinson Cavani, Neymar Jr and Lionel Messi, while Kylian Mbappé remains PSG's all-time top scorer. The team has been led for several seasons by Spanish coach Luis Enrique, with Marquinhos as captain — the club's most decorated player ever, with more than 40 trophies won in a PSG shirt; the side was previously managed by, among others, Laurent Blanc. In 2025, Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembélé confirmed the club's status among the world's elite, while in the Munich final young Désiré Doué shone with two goals and an assist.

Since 1974, PSG has played its home matches at the Parc des Princes, a stadium with a capacity of just under 48,000. The club's operating model combines vast transfer budgets with the development of local talent from the Paris region, including academy graduates Warren Zaïre-Emery and Presnel Kimpembe.

Two Crowns for Paris: PSG and the Era of Luis Enrique

For more than fifty years, the club from the Parc des Princes built its European profile on big names and unfulfilled dreams. Only two consecutive seasons showed that Paris Saint-Germain can win the most important club trophy in Europe, and do it without superstars.

First triumph: Munich 2025

The 2024/25 season began badly for the Parisians. Under the new competition format they finished only 15th in the league phase and had to play the play-offs. After Kylian Mbappé left for Real Madrid, many wrote the team off. Yet it grew stronger week by week. In the knockout rounds it eliminated Brest, Liverpool (on penalties, with Gianluigi Donnarumma as the hero), Aston Villa and Arsenal. Ousmane Dembélé excelled in the role of a false nine.

The final, played on 31 May 2025 at the Allianz Arena in Munich, went down in history. PSG beat Inter Milan 5-0, with goals from Achraf Hakimi, Désiré Doué (twice), Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Senny Mayulu. It is the biggest margin in the history of European Cup and Champions League finals. For PSG it was a first title in the competition, and for France the first since Olympique Marseille in 1993.

Second triumph: Budapest 2026

The title defence followed a completely different script. In the league phase of 2025/26 the Parisians again struggled, finishing 11th and having to play an extra two-legged tie to reach the round of 16. Even so, they reached the final at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, where Arsenal, chasing their first-ever trophy, awaited on 30 May 2026.

The match was nothing like Munich. Kai Havertz put the Londoners ahead in the sixth minute. Arsenal defended deep and PSG held the upper hand but long failed to threaten David Raya's goal. The equaliser came only in the 65th minute, when Dembélé converted a penalty. Extra time settled nothing, so penalties decided it, and the Parisians won them 4-3. Gabriel's miss from the spot sealed the triumph. PSG became the first club since Real Madrid in 2015-2018 to retain the title.

The man who built it

Neither success would have happened without Luis Enrique. Born in Gijón in 1970, as a player he turned out for Sporting Gijón, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. He was known for tireless energy and strength of character, which he later brought to the touchline. He coached AS Roma and Celta Vigo, and in 2014 took over Barcelona. In his very first season, 2015, he won the treble, including the Champions League after beating Juventus in the final. He then managed the Spain national team. A break from work was forced upon him in 2019 by a personal tragedy, the death of his daughter Xana.

At PSG since 2023, he has done what seemed impossible: replacing the cult of individuals with the cult of the team. His side presses aggressively, plays boldly and demands work in defence from everyone, including the biggest names. He backed young players like Doué and let Dembélé blossom. In Munich he showed the beauty of attacking football, and in Budapest, cool nerves and mental resilience.

Two finals, two completely different scenarios and one common denominator: a coach who believed in the collective. Paris now has a dynasty, and Luis Enrique is its architect.
