Slovan BratislavaOn 21 May 1969, in the St. Jakob Stadium in Basel, Slovan Bratislava beat FC Barcelona 3–2 in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup. It remains the only European trophy ever won by a club from Slovakia or the former Czechoslovakia. Slovan took a surprise lead, and the goals came from Ľudovít Cvetler, Vladimír Hrivnák and Ján Čapkovič. The team was coached by Michal Vičan, and on its way to the final it had eliminated Dunfermline Athletic in the semi-final. More than half a century later the night in Basel is still the reference point for the whole of Slovak club football.
The club was founded on 3 May 1919 as I. ČsŠK Bratislava, the First Czechoslovak Sports Club in Bratislava. It celebrated its centenary in 2019, in the same year it marked the 50th anniversary of the victory over Barcelona. Its supporters call the team Belasí, the Sky Blues, after the sky-blue and white colours that remain the club's identity. During the Czechoslovak era Slovan won the national championship eight times, the last in 1991/92, and became the strongest Slovak club in a league dominated by Prague sides such as Sparta. In the early 1970s it was among the leading teams in the country, and the generation of 1969 is still remembered as the club's golden one.
After Czechoslovakia split and the Slovak league was founded in 1993, Slovan became the dominant force in the domestic game. In May 2026 it won its sixteenth Slovak championship, a national record, and its eighth in a row, the longest winning streak in the history of Slovak football. The club is also the record holder in the Slovak Cup, with seventeen wins. Its main rival is Spartak Trnava, and meetings between the two remain the most heated fixture of the Slovak calendar.
The club's ground has a history of its own. Slovan played at the old Tehelné pole, which means "Brickfield", from 1940 until 2009, and then spent ten years at the smaller Pasienky stadium. In 2019 it returned to the same district, where a new national stadium with a capacity of 22,500 had been built. The first official match took place on 3 March 2019, a 2–0 win over Spartak Trnava in front of a full house, and the arena also serves as the home of the Slovak national team. The return to Tehelné pole closed a long chapter of waiting and gave the club a modern home that matches its status.
Slovan's domestic strength has also brought it regular European football. In the 2024/25 season the team played in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League, where it met clubs such as Manchester City, Celtic and Milan. Results were difficult and the team finished 35th out of 36, but a 2–3 defeat against Milan at Tehelné pole showed that it could compete with the best. In 2025/26 Slovan again qualified for European competition as champion.
In a country with a small football market, this combination of titles, a loyal following and the legacy of 1969 keeps the club at the centre of Slovak football. Slovan remains a point of reference for its rivals and a reminder that a team from Bratislava once beat Barcelona in a European final.
