Inter Milan Football Club Internazionale Milano, known worldwide as Inter Milan, is one of the most successful and recognisable clubs in football history. Founded on 9 March 1908 following a split from the Milan Cricket and Football Club, it embraced openness to foreign players from its very inception, a principle proudly reflected in its full name. Inter is also the only Italian team never to have been relegated from the top flight (Serie A) and has, for over a century, co-written the history of European football from the legendary San Siro stadium (officially Stadio Giuseppe Meazza).
The club's visual identity is inextricably linked to its characteristic colours. The traditional home shirts feature vertical black-and-blue stripes, which gave rise to the team's famous nickname, the Nerazzurri. These colours were chosen personally by the club's founder, the painter Giorgio Muggiani: black was meant to represent the night, while blue symbolised the sky. This combination was deliberately designed to contrast with the red-and-black colours of local rivals AC Milan, emphasising the distinctiveness of the newly formed club.
An especially fascinating element of Inter's heraldry is the snake motif known as the Biscione – a historic, zigzagging serpent swallowing a human figure, once the symbol of the powerful Visconti family that ruled Milan. For Inter fans, the snake has become the club's unofficial mascot and an embodiment of cunning, strength and pride in Milanese heritage. The motif has returned regularly over the years, appearing in club logos, promotional material, and as a striking texture decorating both home and away kits.
Inter won its first Scudetto as early as 1910, but the club's true golden era came in the 1960s under Argentine coach Helenio Herrera, creator of the famous catenaccio system. His "Grande Inter" won the European Cup in two consecutive years, 1964 and 1965, along with the Intercontinental Cup on both occasions. Another historic milestone arrived in 2010, when a side managed by José Mourinho became the first Italian club ever to complete the treble, winning Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League in the same season.
