Sporting CP Sporting CP has long stood among Portugal’s elite, sharing the spotlight with Benfica and FC Porto in the country’s traditional "Big Three". Founded in Lisbon in 1906 under the patronage of José de Alvalade, the club quickly adopted the green-and-white colours and the lion as its symbol, giving rise to the enduring nickname "Os Leões" (The Lions).
Sporting is perhaps best known internationally for an extraordinary youth academy, based at the club’s training complex in Alcochete. Generations of outstanding footballers have passed through its ranks before becoming global stars, among them Luís Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Ricardo Quaresma and João Félix, alongside countless other Portuguese internationals who first learned the game wearing green and white.
On the honours board, the club has collected numerous Primeira Liga titles and a long list of Taça de Portugal triumphs, and remains the only Portuguese side to have won a European trophy outside the Champions League and Europa League picture, lifting the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1964. After a long wait for domestic glory, Sporting returned to the top of Portuguese football in the 2020/21 season and added another league crown a few years later, restoring the club to the very top of the national game.
Since 2003, Sporting have played their home matches at the modern Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon, a venue that also hosted matches during UEFA Euro 2004. The stadium remains a symbol of the club’s ambition, hosting fierce derbies against Benfica and FC Porto that continue to define the rhythm of Portuguese football each season.
