SL BenficaSL Benfica, founded in 1904, is the most successful football club in Portugal, boasting a record 38 domestic league titles. Its golden era came in the 1960s, when the team, led by the brilliant Eusébio, became a true powerhouse and a symbol of European football. During that decade, Benfica challenged the legendary Real Madrid, reaching the European Cup final an impressive five times. Two of those finals ended in spectacular triumphs — in 1961 after a dramatic match against Barcelona (3–2), and in 1962 following a masterclass performance that defeated Real Madrid and their star Ferenc Puskás (5–3).
Connected to this era of glory is the famous "curse of Béla Guttmann." After being denied a pay raise, the Hungarian manager declared that the club would not win a European trophy for another hundred years. Since then, Benfica has lost eight consecutive European finals — five in the European Cup/Champions League (1963, 1965, 1968, 1988, 1990) and three in the UEFA Cup/Europa League (1983, 2013, 2014) — making it one of the most unbelievable and painful streaks in sports history.
Today, the club is a global benchmark for scouting and youth development. Its state-of-the-art academy regularly produces world-class stars who are later sold for record-breaking fees, such as João Félix and Rúben Dias. A separate testament to the club's financial acumen is the case of Enzo Fernández — signed from River Plate in the summer of 2022 and sold just seven months later to Chelsea for a record fee, showing that Benfica's strength rests both on its own academy and on remarkably sharp scouting in the transfer market.
The team's home is the impressive Estádio da Luz in Lisbon. It is there, before every match, that a live bald eagle named Vitória traditionally flies around the stands before landing on the club crest. For millions of loyal fans, known as Benfiquistas, this club is far more than just a sport — it is a true religion passed down from generation to generation.
