NEC Nijmegen represents the working-class roots and resilient spirit of the oldest city in the Netherlands. The club's history dates back to 15 November 1900, when local workers founded Eendracht. In April 1910, following a merger with NVV Nijmegen, the entity took its present form. The red, green, and black colours reflect both team tradition and the civic identity of Nijmegen. Rather than a vast trophy collection, the club's identity is defined by its deep community connection and its reputation as a determined competitor capable of challenging the country's elite.

The team plays its home matches at the historic Goffertstadion, which opened in 1939. Built as a public works project during the Great Depression, the stadium bowl was dug out manually by unemployed local labourers, earning it the enduring nickname De Bloedkuul (Blood Pit). Following the destruction of their previous ground during World War II, NEC Nijmegen made the venue their permanent home in 1945, with extensive modernisations at the turn of the millennium maintaining its distinct setting within the surrounding parkland.

While the club has never won the Eredivisie title or the KNVB Cup, it holds a unique record in domestic cup competitions. NEC Nijmegen has reached the KNVB Cup final on six occasions—in 1973, 1983, 1994, 2000, 2024, and 2026—finishing as runners-up each time. The 1983 final holds additional historical significance, as legendary Dutch footballer Johan Cruyff played the final official match of his career for Ajax against the Nijmegen side.

The club's most celebrated European campaign came during the 2008–09 season under manager Mario Been. Competing in the UEFA Cup, NEC Nijmegen advanced from the group stage following a memorable 2–1 away victory against Spartak Moscow and a 2–0 home win over Udinese. Reaching the Round of 32, where they faced Hamburger SV, remains the highest international achievement in the club's history.
