Omonia NicosiaOmonia Nicosia is one of the most successful, popular, and traditional football clubs in Cyprus. Known to fans as The Queen and The Shamrock, the club has captured 22 domestic league titles, 16 Cypriot Cups, and 17 Super Cups over the decades, firmly establishing itself at the very top of the country's all-time football rankings. The club's golden era came during the 1970s and 1980s, when, led by legendary forward Sotiris Kaiafas — widely regarded as the greatest footballer in Cypriot history — the Green-Whites won seven league titles in the 1970s alone, and finished either first or second in the league fourteen years running between 1973 and 1986. After a relatively lean period since their previous championship in 2020–21, the club claimed its 22nd league title in May 2026, once again securing qualification for the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds — a run that follows earlier group-stage appearances in the Europa League and Conference League, where they fearlessly challenged established continental brands.
However, the identity of Omonia Nicosia is permanently intertwined with its unique, deep political and social background, which shaped the club's foundation on 4 June 1948. The team was born out of a split in the leadership of APOEL, provoked by the Greek Civil War, when a group of officials and players objected to a club telegram condemning what it called a "communist mutiny" and were expelled as a result. The newly formed Omonia became a traditional symbol of the Cypriot working class and left-wing circles, standing in stark contrast to their right-wing local rivals, APOEL. These strong social roots mean that their massive and fanatical fanbase, led by the Gate 9 group, creates an incredibly vibrant, politically charged, and unique atmosphere in the stands. The Great Derby of Nicosia — played since 1953 and known as the "Derby of the Eternal Enemies" — remains the most significant sporting and cultural event on the island, dividing the capital in half and electrifying the entire Cypriot community. The two clubs today share the same home, the nearly 23,000-capacity GSP Stadium.
