Czechia on the rise – a regular in europe's top ranking tier
Recent years have been a period of clear strengthening for Czech club football on the European stage. Czechia has consistently remained close to the top of the UEFA association ranking, and one of the keys to this success is something many rivals lack: regular participation in the Champions League. The UEFA association ranking takes into account the results of all clubs from a given federation and influences the number of places allocated to it in subsequent seasons.
Not a one-off surge
Unlike countries whose strong ranking position is sometimes the result of a single exceptionally successful season, Czechia has built its position consistently. In recent seasons, Slavia Prague and Sparta Prague have alternated in reaching the Champions League league phase, and on some occasions both have done so.
This consistency, rather than one spectacular jump, makes Czech football's progress credible. The two Prague clubs regularly gain experience against teams from England, Spain, Germany and Italy, while Czech clubs have also become increasingly competitive in the Europa League and Conference League.
Close to the top
Czechia remains in the immediate vicinity of the UEFA top ten. Depending on the current season and the results of its rivals, it may sit just outside the top ten or move into it, but its presence in this part of the ranking is not accidental.
For Czech football, this has major importance. A high position can mean a more favourable allocation of European competition places, better seeding and greater chances that the champions or leading clubs will begin their campaigns from a stronger position.
Sparta and Slavia
Sparta Prague is one of the most successful clubs in Czech football. It has a long history in European competitions and for decades was the country's most frequent representative in the European Cup and Champions League.
The Letná-based club has regularly managed to progress through qualifying rounds and in recent seasons has recorded valuable victories in the Europa League and Conference League. Its strengths include tradition, a large fan base and an increasingly effective transfer policy.
Slavia Prague, meanwhile, has become one of the most stable clubs in Central Europe in recent years. The team has reached the advanced stages of the Europa League, while its matches against Chelsea, Arsenal, Sevilla and Borussia Dortmund have attracted attention from football fans across Europe.
Slavia is known for its intense pressing, strong physical preparation and ability to develop players. The club often recruits footballers from smaller leagues, improves their sporting value and subsequently sells them to wealthier teams.
Viktoria Plzeň – the third pillar
The Czech ranking is not based solely on the Prague rivalry. Viktoria Plzeň plays a very important role as well, having repeatedly appeared in the league phases of the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League in recent seasons.
Viktoria operates in a smaller market than Sparta and Slavia, but through stable management it has regularly competed with the Prague clubs for the Czech title. In European competitions, it has earned points even against very strong opponents, and its club coefficient is among the highest in Czech football.
The club from Plzeň is a good example of a team that does not rely on a one-off success. Over several seasons, Viktoria has maintained a level that has allowed it to progress through qualifying rounds and return to the league phase. As a result, Czechia receives important support from outside the capital as well.
Other clubs
Other Czech clubs also appear in European competitions, including Sigma Olomouc, Jablonec, Mladá Boleslav, Slovácko, Hradec Králové and others. Their results are less consistent, but individual successful campaigns add to the overall depth of Czech football.
Czechia has an advantage over many of its rivals in that, besides the three leading clubs, it has several other teams capable of progressing through qualifying rounds. Not every season is equally successful, but the country does not lose its entire momentum because of a poor campaign by one leading club.
This depth is one of the reasons Czechia has maintained a high position in the ranking. Slavia, Sparta and Viktoria collect the majority of the points, but the rest of the league can contribute the results needed to maintain the country's position.
The Czech development model
Czech football benefits from a well-developed coaching tradition. Clubs are capable of developing technically gifted players who are tactically intelligent and prepared for an intense style of football.
In recent years, Czech players have increasingly moved to the Bundesliga, Premier League, Serie A and other major leagues. Tomáš Souček and Vladimír Coufal became important players at West Ham United, Patrik Schick has regularly featured in the Bundesliga, while other internationals have developed in Germany, Italy, England and Spain.
Transfers are an important part of the financial model of Czech clubs. A team can sell a player for a significant fee and then reinvest part of the proceeds in its academy, scouting network and new players. This model helps clubs remain competitive without budgets comparable to those of teams from Europe's biggest leagues.
European club achievements
Czechia has a rich history in European competitions. The country's clubs have reached the latter stages of major tournaments, although no Czech club has won the European Cup/Champions League or the UEFA Cup/Europa League.
Sparta Prague reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1972, while Slavia Prague has reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup and Europa League. Viktoria Plzeň and other Czech teams have also reached the advanced stages of modern European competitions.
The absence of a Champions League or Europa League title does not mean Czech clubs lack European achievements. They regularly defeat wealthier opponents, while their clubs often remain in European competition beyond the league phase.
The national team and the legacy of Czechoslovakia
The Czech national team also has a rich history. The greatest achievement of independent Czechia came at the 1996 European Championship, when the team played attractive attacking football and reached the final against Germany.
Earlier, as Czechoslovakia, the country won the European Championship in 1976. In the final, Czechoslovakia defeated West Germany on penalties, with Antonín Panenka's decisive effort becoming one of the most famous moments in football history.
The characteristic chipped penalty is now known worldwide as a Panenka. It remains one of the most recognisable Czech football references and a symbol of the technical courage of that generation.
The modern national team has not yet reached the level of the golden generation of the 1970s, but Czechia has regularly participated in the European Championship. Its players benefit from experience gained in strong domestic and foreign leagues, while the country continues to produce technically gifted footballers.
A foundation for the years ahead
Czechia remains close to the European elite thanks to a combination of several factors: regular Champions League participation by Slavia and Sparta, consistent results from Viktoria Plzeň, strong player development and sensible transfer policies.
This is not a one-off surge but a sustained trend. When one of the Prague clubs has a weaker season, the other can collect points, while Viktoria or another Czech representative can often contribute as well.
As long as Czech clubs continue to qualify regularly for the Champions League league phase, Czechia has solid foundations for remaining close to the UEFA top ten. The biggest challenge will be maintaining this consistency and avoiding a situation in which the departure of a key generation of players causes the entire system to lose momentum.
