Cyprus in the UEFA country ranking

Cyprus belongs to the group of countries that have made their presence increasingly felt in European competitions in recent seasons. Over the five-year period used to calculate the UEFA country ranking, Cypriot clubs have built up a solid points tally, with the 2025/26 campaign being their best season in terms of points earned.

In the UEFA rankings, Cyprus currently sits around 15th place, alongside countries such as Norway, Switzerland and Hungary. This position allows Cyprus to compete with leagues that have greater potential, although the advantage over lower-ranked countries is not large enough to consider the position fully secure.

The growing importance of Cypriot clubs

Cyprus' high position is primarily the result of several of its most experienced clubs. APOEL Nicosia, Omonia Nicosia, Anorthosis Famagusta, Apollon Limassol and Pafos FC have been particularly important. Their regular participation in the qualifying rounds and league phases of European competitions allows them to earn points even when reaching the most prestigious stages of the season is not possible.

The Conference League is particularly important for Cyprus. The introduction of the competition created an additional opportunity for clubs from smaller countries to compete against opponents of a similar level. Cypriot teams can record victories and progress through several rounds more frequently, which directly contributes to improving the country's coefficient.

A high position in the ranking also has practical significance. It can mean more favourable seeding, better chances of drawing easier opponents in qualifying rounds and the opportunity to enter several clubs into European competitions. Every additional progression through the rounds, in turn, increases Cyprus' chances of remaining close to leagues of a similar level.

APOEL's greatest achievement

The most important achievement in Cypriot football remains APOEL's run to the Champions League quarter-finals in the 2011/12 season. The Nicosia club won its group, finishing ahead of teams including Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk and Zenit St Petersburg. It then eliminated Olympique Lyon on penalties, becoming the first Cypriot team in history to reach the last eight of Europe's premier club competition.

In the quarter-finals, APOEL faced Real Madrid. The Spanish giants proved too strong, but reaching that stage was an event of enormous significance. APOEL's success demonstrated that a club from Cyprus could not only progress through qualifying rounds, but also compete in the Champions League knockout stages.

APOEL have also achieved notable results in the Europa League. In one edition of the competition, the club reached the round of 16, which was another historic achievement for Cypriot football. UEFA regards this result as one of the biggest successes in the history of club football on the island.

Have Cypriot clubs won a European trophy?

Cypriot clubs have not yet won the main trophy in the Champions League, Europa League or Conference League. APOEL came closest to a major triumph when they reached the Champions League quarter-finals, but they were unable to progress to the semi-finals. Other Cypriot teams have also never reached the final of one of UEFA's major modern club competitions.

This does not mean that Cyprus has lacked success. APOEL's run to the Champions League quarter-finals, regular appearances by Cypriot teams in the league phases and occasional victories over established opponents have made Cyprus much more prominent on the European football map.

Prospects for Cyprus

Cyprus' position in the UEFA ranking is the result of several clubs consistently collecting points rather than a single unexpected result. The best season during the period under review confirmed that Cypriot teams are capable of making effective use of the opportunities provided by European competitions.

However, remaining close to countries such as Norway, Switzerland and Hungary will require further progress to the league phases. Cyprus already has the experience and clubs capable of producing surprises, but moving higher in the ranking will require consistent results from several teams in the same season.
