AEK Larnaca refers to Kition, the ancient Greek city-kingdom that once stood on the site of today's Larnaca, and the club's crest depicts admiral Kimon, who died around 450 BC defending Kition in battle against the Persians. The club itself has a far shorter, though still eventful, history – it was formed on 18 July 1994 through the merger of two local sides: EPA Larnaca, founded in 1930, and Pezoporikos Larnaca, active since 1929. Before the merger, the two clubs had together won five Cypriot league titles and six Cypriot Cups; in June 2025 the Cyprus Football Association formally recognised those honours as part of AEK's record.

AEK itself, playing in yellow and green, has never won the national championship, but has lifted the Cypriot Cup three times – in the 2003–04, 2017–18 and 2024–25 seasons. Since the 2016–17 season the club has played its home matches at the AEK Arena, named after Georgios Karapatakis.

On the European stage, AEK Larnaca has written several notable chapters. In 2011–12 the club reached a UEFA group stage for the first time, and in 2022 it made its Champions League qualifying debut. In 2022–23 the team advanced to the round of 16 of the Europa Conference League, where it was eliminated by West Ham. The most remarkable chapter, however, came in the 2025–26 season: in the Conference League's league phase, AEK won 1–0 away at Crystal Palace, recording the first-ever victory by a Cypriot club over English opposition in a UEFA competition. The round-of-16 rematch, however, ended in a 1–2 extra-time defeat for a nine-man Larnaca side, sending the English club through 2–1 on aggregate.
