Pafos FC is one of the most rapidly developing football projects in Europe over the last decade - a club that in under ten years went from the Cypriot second division to the league phase of the Champions League. It was founded on 10 June 2014 through the merger of local clubs AEP Paphos and AEK Kouklia, starting out in the second tier and yo-yoing between divisions for several seasons.

The turning point came in 2017, when control of the club was taken over by the foreign investment group Total Sports Investments, owned by a Russian businessman and run by a British manager. Large-scale investment in training infrastructure and a modern approach to recruiting players from around the world quickly transformed the team's fortunes.

The club's first major trophy came in 2024, when Pafos sensationally won the Cypriot Cup, beating Omonia Nicosia 3-0 in the final thanks to goals from Muamer Tanković, Vlad Dragomir and Pedro Rodrigues - the club's first significant honour and its ticket to European competition. An even bigger milestone followed in the 2024-25 season, when Pafos - a second-division side just eight years earlier - won the Cypriot league title for the first time in its history.

The championship opened the door to Champions League qualifying, where Pafos beat Maccabi Tel Aviv and Dinamo Chișinău in succession before winning the play-off against Red Star Belgrade, reaching the league phase of Europe's most prestigious club competition for the first time - an unprecedented achievement for Cypriot football.

The team's mainstay in recent years was Swedish forward Muamer Tanković, a Fulham academy product who played Premier League football as a teenager and stayed with Pafos until 2025, when he left for city rivals Omonia. The current focal point of the attack is Brazilian forward Jajá, signed on a permanent deal in the summer of 2025.

Because the club's home ground, the Stelios Kyriakides Stadium in Paphos, does not meet UEFA standards for European fixtures, the team plays its international home matches at the Alphamega Stadium in Limassol. Despite lacking the multi-generational history of its rivals from Nicosia or Limassol, Pafos has proven that modern capital combined with a precise sporting vision can build a new Mediterranean football powerhouse in less than a decade.

European Capital of Culture 2017

In 2017, Pafos shared the title of European Capital of Culture with Aarhus, Denmark, marking a high point in the city's cultural development. The designation, awarded by the European Union, recognised Pafos not only for its ancient heritage—being a UNESCO World Heritage site linked to the mythological birthplace of Aphrodite—but also for its efforts to revitalise urban cultural life. Throughout the year, the city hosted hundreds of events, including art exhibitions, theatre performances, music festivals, and archaeological projects aimed at connecting local communities with their history. The "Linking Continents, Bridging Cultures" theme reflected Pafos' position as a Mediterranean crossroads between Europe, Asia, and Africa. Infrastructure improvements, such as the renovation of public spaces and the harbour area, were accelerated to support the programme. Although the initiative faced some administrative challenges, it succeeded in raising the international profile of Pafos and attracting cultural tourism. For a city of roughly 55,000 residents, serving as European Capital of Culture was a transformative experience that extended beyond 2017, influencing subsequent investments in arts, heritage preservation, and community projects that continue to shape the identity of modern Pafos.

Title in the 11th season of existence

Pafos FC achieved one of the fastest rises to the top in modern European football by winning the Cypriot First Division title in the 2024/25 season—just 11 years after the club's foundation. Established on 10 June 2014 through the merger of AEP Pafos and AEK Kouklia, the team spent its early years climbing through the divisions and stabilising in the top flight. After promotion as Second Division runners-up in 2015, Pafos endured relegation and rebuilding before emerging as a consistent top-four side in the 2020s. The breakthrough came in 2024, when the club secured its first major trophy, the Cypriot Cup, and followed it with the league championship a year later. Winning the title in only the 11th season placed Pafos among the quickest newly founded clubs in Europe to reach domestic supremacy, alongside cases like RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim. The achievement reflected long-term investment, smart recruitment, and a clear sporting strategy. For a city of around 55,000 inhabitants, Pafos FC's rapid transformation from a merger project to national champions marked a remarkable chapter in Cypriot football history.

Champions League debut with David Luiz

In the 2025/26 season, Pafos FC made history by entering the UEFA Champions League qualifiers for the first time in the club's short existence. The Cypriot side's European campaign attracted global attention after the signing of former Brazil international David Luiz, who joined the defence at the age of 38. His arrival transformed Pafos from a domestic contender into a story followed by major outlets such as BBC Sport, which highlighted the unusual pairing of a modest Cypriot club and a World Cup-winning defender. Luiz brought experience from Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Arsenal, as well as 89 caps for Brazil. For Pafos, his presence was both a sporting and marketing coup, raising the profile of the team ahead of crucial qualifiers. Although the club ultimately progressed through the early rounds of European competition via the Europa League and Conference League pathways, the image of Luiz wearing the Pafos shirt became one of the most talked-about moments in Cypriot football that year. The move symbolised the growing ambition of Pafos FC and demonstrated that even smaller European clubs can attract big names when offering competitive projects and visibility on the continental stage.
