APOEL Nicosia, founded in 1926, is Cyprus's record champion with 29 league titles (the most recent in 2023/24). Yet the club wrote its finest chapter beyond the island's shores — in the 2011/12 season, fielding a squad valued at just £1.3 million, APOEL sensationally reached the Champions League quarter-finals, eliminating French side Olympique Lyon on penalties to become the first Cypriot club ever to reach that stage.

In the quarter-final, despite a budget many times smaller than their opponents, APOEL held off Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid for 75 minutes at home before eventually losing 0–3, then falling 2–5 in the return leg at the Santiago Bernabéu (2–8 on aggregate). That fairy-tale run remains the single greatest moment in the history of Cypriot club football.
