Drita Gnjilane FC Drita is one of the historic football clubs of Gjilan and one of the established names in Kosovar football. Founded in 1947, the club has maintained a strong connection with its home city for generations. Its name, derived from the Albanian word for “light”, became associated with a club whose history was shaped by both sporting ambition and the difficult political circumstances surrounding football in Kosovo during the second half of the 20th century.
The early history of Drita was far from straightforward. The club was founded by citizens of Gjilan and initially competed in local and regional football. In 1952, it was dissolved by the authorities, while former players joined the city's other established side. Drita's sporting tradition nevertheless survived, and the club later returned to competition. One of the important milestones from the pre-independence period came in the 1962/63 season, when Drita won the Kosovo Province League.
A new chapter began in the early 1990s, when football in Kosovo developed its own parallel competition structure. Drita joined the Kosovo league system in 1991 and gradually became one of the leading clubs in the region. The club's first major success in the independent Kosovo competition era came in the Kosovo Cup in 2000/01, when Drita defeated Gjilani in the final on penalties after a 1–1 draw. The victory was particularly significant because the final was contested by two clubs from the same city.
Drita subsequently established itself as a regular contender for the national championship. The club won its first recognised Kosovo Superleague title in the 2017/18 season, finishing ahead of Prishtina. Its second championship followed in 2019/20, while the third came in 2024/25 under coach Zekirija Ramadani. Drita added another major honour in January 2026, defeating Ballkani on penalties in the Kosovo Super Cup final to win the competition for the second time. The club therefore entered the 2026/27 season with three Kosovo league titles and two Super Cup victories in the post-UEFA era.
European competition has become an increasingly important part of Drita's modern identity. The club made its UEFA debut in the Champions League qualifying rounds in 2018 and has since appeared in the qualifying stages of the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. Among its notable early results was a 2–1 aggregate victory over Sileks in the 2020/21 Europa League qualifying rounds. Drita's European progress accelerated during the 2025/26 season, when it reached the league phase of the UEFA Conference League for the first time.
That campaign produced several historic milestones. Drita collected eight points in the league phase, including a 1–0 away victory over Shelbourne in Dublin and a 1–0 home win against Shkëndija. Two draws, against KuPS Kuopio and Omonia, completed a sequence that took the club into the knockout phase play-offs. UEFA described Drita's achievement as a first for a Kosovan club: it became the first team from Kosovo to progress to the knockout stage of a UEFA men's club competition. Drita eventually faced NK Celje, losing 3–2 in both legs and going out 6–4 on aggregate.
The 2025/26 European campaign also demonstrated how far Drita had progressed from its earlier qualifying appearances. The club entered the season in the Champions League, where it defeated Luxembourg's Differdange 03 4–2 on aggregate. It subsequently continued its European route through the Europa League and Conference League. The run made Drita the second Kosovan club to reach the league phase or group stage of a major UEFA competition, following Ballkani.
Drita's traditional identity is closely connected with blue and white, colours reflected in the club's nickname Intelektualët, used for its supporters. The team is based in Gjilan and has traditionally played at the city's football stadium, although UEFA fixtures have also been staged at the Fadil Vokrri Stadium in Pristina when required by European regulations.
The history of FC Drita is therefore defined by continuity as much as by its trophies. From its foundation in 1947 and the interruption of its early existence, through the development of independent Kosovar football and the club's first national championship in 2018, Drita has gradually established itself among Kosovo's leading sides. Its three league titles, two Super Cups and especially its historic 2025/26 Conference League campaign have given the Gjilan club an important place in the development of modern Kosovar football.
