Víkingur Reykjavík Víkingur Reykjavík is one of the oldest sports clubs in Iceland, founded on 21 April 1908 by Axel Andrésson, a pioneering figure in Icelandic football who served as the club's first chairman and coach. Based in the Fossvogur district of Reykjavík, the club developed from its earliest years as a multi-sport organisation, today also running divisions in handball, tennis and karate alongside football.
The club's red-and-black striped colours date back to the 1940s, when chairman Þorbjörn Þórðarson designed the original crest featuring a leather ball framed by red, white and black elements. In men's football, Víkingur has won eight national championships and five Icelandic Cups, placing it among the most decorated clubs in the country's top flight. The most recent league title came in 2025, underlining the club's continued presence at the top of Icelandic football.
A landmark moment in European competition arrived in the 2024–25 season, when Víkingur reached the league phase of the newly reformatted 36-team UEFA Conference League — the club's first-ever appearance in the group or league phase of a major UEFA competition, and a historic achievement for Icelandic club football.
Home matches are played at the intimate Víkingsvöllur, with a capacity of around 1,450. The first team is currently coached by Sölvi Ottesen, a former Iceland international and long-serving Víkingur player, embodying the continuity between the club's history and its present-day identity. Despite modest resources and Iceland's small population, the club has sustained its competitiveness through a strong youth academy, a close-knit local community, and regular participation in European qualifying rounds.
