Valur ReykjavíkValur Reykjavík is one of the most successful clubs in Icelandic football history. Founded on 11 May 1911 as ÍF KFUM Reykjavík, the club adopted the name Valur in 1918 following a merger with Voeringjar. Over more than a century of existence, the Reykjavík-based side has established itself as one of Iceland's most important sporting institutions, with its red-and-white colours becoming a symbol of tradition and continuity in Icelandic football.
Valur has won 23 Icelandic championships, placing the club second in the all-time rankings behind KR Reykjavík. The first league title came in 1930, with subsequent successes spanning different eras – from the 1930s and 1940s, through periods of dominance in the 1960s and 1970s, to the modern era with titles in 2007, 2017, 2018 and 2020. The club's domestic honours also include 11 Icelandic Cup victories, including a run of four consecutive triumphs between 1990 and 1992 and back-to-back successes in 2015 and 2016. This record makes Valur the second most decorated club in Icelandic football.
A distinctive feature of Valur is its identity as a multi-sport organisation. In addition to football, the club has important handball and basketball sections that have also achieved significant success at national level. In men's handball, Valur holds the record with 24 championship titles, demonstrating the club's importance in Icelandic sport extends far beyond football. This broader sporting identity has made Valur one of the most significant sporting organisations associated with Reykjavík.
The club also has a long history of participation in European competitions. Valur first represented Iceland in the European Cup Winners' Cup in the 1966–67 season, losing a two-legged tie to Standard Liège. In 1968, Valur played a memorable match against Benfica Lisbon in the European Cup, watched by 18,243 spectators – a record attendance for a football match in Iceland that still stands today. In subsequent decades, the club has appeared in qualifying rounds for the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League, though it has never progressed beyond the second round.
An important element of Valur's history is its long-standing presence at Hlíðarendi stadium in Reykjavík. The sports complex, with a capacity of around 1,500 seats, has been associated with the club for decades and remains its main home ground. It is here that the sporting life of one of Iceland's most distinguished football organisations is concentrated.
More than a century of activity has made Valur Reykjavík a permanent fixture in the history of Icelandic sport. The club's 23 national championships, 11 Icelandic Cups and regular appearances in European competitions create a record that distinguishes it from its rivals. Its significance, however, stems not only from the number of trophies but also from its long tradition, multi-sport structure and strong connection to Reykjavík.
