Kauno Žalgiris In Lithuanian sport, the name Kaunas Žalgiris is associated almost exclusively with the legendary basketball team; however, a football club also operates within the structure of the same organization. Founded in 2004 as FM Spyris Kaunas, the team officially adopted the historic name FK Kauno Žalgiris at the beginning of 2016, becoming the football branch of the Kaunas sports giant. Although domestically the Kaunas side managed to win the Lithuanian league runners-up title in 2022 and has finished on the lowest step of the podium several times, its position in the hierarchy of Lithuanian sport remains far behind the highly decorated basketball section, which generates incomparably greater media attention and attendance.
In international football rankings, the Kaunas team occupies distant positions, reflecting the challenging conditions and overall level of club football in the country. In the national and club rankings maintained by UEFA, FK Kauno Žalgiris sits outside the top 200 European teams, earning points mainly through regular but usually brief appearances in the qualifying rounds of the Conference League. It is worth noting that in the same rankings, their namesake from the capital, FK Žalgiris Vilnius, is rated significantly higher, with whom the Kaunas side is often confused by foreign fans.
The Žalgiris brand in Kaunas builds its global identity on the basketball courts of the EuroLeague, while its football counterpart at the S. Darius and S. Girėnas Stadium continues to fight to emerge from the shadow of Lithuania’s national obsession — basketball.
