Dinamo Zagreb

Dinamo Zagreb is the most successful club in Croatian football, based at the Maksimir stadium in Zagreb. The club was founded on 9 June 1945 as the successor to the pre-war HŠK Građanski, established in 1911 and dissolved after the war for political reasons; Dinamo itself operated under the names HAŠK Građanski and Croatia Zagreb between 1991 and 2000, before reverting to its current name.

In the Croatian top division, Dinamo have won 26 league titles to date, including a run of 11 consecutive championships between 2005–06 and 2015–16. The club has also won the Croatian Cup on multiple occasions. Dinamo's main rival remains Hajduk Split, and matches between the two sides are known as the Eternal Derby.

On the European stage, Dinamo remain the only Croatian club to have won a continental trophy, lifting the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, the forerunner of the UEFA Cup, in 1967, defeating England's Leeds United in the final (2-0 at home, 0-0 away). In subsequent decades, the team has regularly featured in the group stages of the Champions League and Europa League, recording notable wins over sides such as Arsenal (2015) and Chelsea (2022).

An important part of the club's operations is its youth academy, which has produced players including Luka Modrić, winner of the 2018 Ballon d'Or, as well as Mateo Kovačić and Joško Gvardiol. Dani Olmo also passed through Dinamo's academy, having joined it as a teenager. Academy graduates have for years formed a significant part of Croatia's national team, including the squad that reached the 2018 World Cup final.

Maksimir Stadium: history, myths, and architectural contrasts

Opened on 5 May 1912 on land owned by the Archdiocese of Zagreb near the historic Maksimir Park, Maksimir Stadium is a legendary monument of Balkan football and the long-standing home of GNK Dinamo Zagreb. Originally designed by architect Vladimir Turina, the stadium was expanded over several decades, reaching its historical peak in the 1970s with a capacity exceeding 64,000 spectators. However, Maksimir is globally famous not just for sporting triumphs, but for its direct involvement in geopolitical history. On 13 May 1990, just weeks after Croatia’s first multi-party elections, a match between Dinamo Zagreb and Red Star Belgrade erupted into a massive riot between Dinamo’s Bad Blue Boys and Belgrade’s Delije. During the chaos on the pitch, 21-year-old Dinamo captain Zvonimir Boban delivered an iconic flying kick to a police officer who was mistreating a fan. The riot forced the match to be abandoned and became an enduring national myth, symbolically viewed by Croatians as the catalyst for the Croatian War of Independence.

Beyond its political legacy, the stadium served as an impenetrable fortress for the Croatia National Football Team during its rise in international football. Between 1990 and 2008, Croatia maintained an extraordinary 16-year undefeated streak at Maksimir in official competitive matches, a historic run finally broken by England in September 2008. On this pitch, icons such as Davor Šuker, Luka Modrić, and Ivan Rakitić secured qualification for multiple World Cup and European Championship tournaments. Despite its storied history, Maksimir epitomizes a stark contrast in Croatian football, where world-class sporting talent stands alongside severely outdated infrastructure. The stadium's asymmetrical design, deep spectator trenches, and exposed concrete have long struggled to meet modern UEFA standards. The situation worsened significantly in March 2020, when a 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck Zagreb, rendering the entire East Stand structurally unsafe and permanently closing it, which reduced capacity from nearly 35,000 to roughly 24,800. Following years of legal and structural debate, local authorities agreed on plans to fully demolish the historic arena to make way for an all-new, high-tech 34,000-seat stadium on the same site.
