NK Osijek is a Croatian football club whose tradition dates back to 1916 and the then-active Jล K Slavija Osijek โ the most influential club in the region during the interwar period, a seven-time participant in the top tier of Yugoslav football. The official founding date of today's club, however, is considered to be 27 February 1947, when a merger of NK Slavonija and NK Bratstvo created the team FK Proleter, the direct predecessor of today's Osijek.
The team, nicknamed Bijelo-plavi (The White-Blues), spent decades as the most representative club from Slavonia in Yugoslav competition, recording more seasons in the top division than any other team from the region. Following Croatia's declaration of independence in 1992, Osijek became one of only four clubs โ alongside Dinamo Zagreb, Hajduk Split and Rijeka โ that have never been relegated from the top flight of the independent country's football league, a fact that remains one of the club's most defining features.
Although Osijek has yet to win either the Croatian championship or the Croatian Cup in men's senior competition, it has been a regular participant in European competitions, reaching the Europa League play-off round in recent years (2017โ18 season) as well as Conference League qualifying. The 2023โ24 season brought a historic milestone for the club: a move into the newly built Opus Arena, where an attendance record was set during a match against Dinamo Zagreb, watched by more than 12,000 spectators.
It is worth noting that the club's women's section, ลฝNK Osijek, founded in 1990, can boast a considerably richer trophy haul, remaining the most successful team in the history of Croatian women's football, with more than twenty league titles to its name, including the 2010โ11 season, completed without dropping a single point across the entire league campaign.
