Adana Demirspor Adana Demirspor is a Turkish sports club from the city of Adana in southern Anatolia, founded on 28 December 1940 by workers of the Turkish State Railways (TCDD). Until the 1980s, the club maintained departments in eight different sports, with its water polo team earning particular renown, remaining unbeaten in domestic competition for three decades. The club's sporting success and working-class origins attracted a large and loyal fan base from the city's labour community.
It was precisely tensions over the club's character that led, in 1954, to the founding of a rival: Adanaspor, established by local merchants and artisans dissatisfied with Demirspor's management under the TCDD. Competition between the two clubs for dominance of the city grew into one of the fiercest local rivalries in Turkish football, still known today as the Adana derby. Demirspor was the first club based outside Istanbul, Ankara or İzmir to join the national football league, doing so in the 1960–61 season.
Nicknamed Mavi Şimşekler (The Blue Lightnings) and playing in navy blue, the team spent decades outside the upper echelons of Turkish football, never winning a national championship. A turning point came on 9 May 2021, when the club returned to the Süper Lig after 26 years' absence from the top flight. In the following seasons, Adana Demirspor, bolstered by players such as Mario Balotelli, recorded the best results in its history, finishing fourth in the league in the 2022–23 season.
That result earned the club a historic European debut: in the 2023–24 season, Demirspor made its first-ever appearance in UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying. Managed by Patrick Kluivert, the team eliminated Romania's CFR Cluj and Croatia's NK Osijek in succession, reaching the play-off round, where it fell to Belgium's Genk only on penalties after a drawn two-legged tie. Despite still lacking a domestic championship title, this campaign remains the brightest chapter in the club's international history.
