KRC Genk KRC Genk is one of the youngest among Europe's leading clubs, born out of the economic transformation of the Limburg coal-mining basin. The club was founded on 1 July 1988 through the merger of two teams representing neighbouring collieries - Waterschei Thor and KFC Winterslag - both of which had recently been shut down along with Belgium's mining industry. The new club inherited its licence number (matricule) from Winterslag, while its first ground was the former Waterschei stadium, later expanded and repeatedly renamed as commercial sponsors changed.
The early years gave little hint of future success - Genk were relegated in their very first season and only returned to the top flight in the mid-1990s under coach Aimé Anthuenis. The breakthrough came in 1998, when the club won the Belgian Cup, followed a year later by its first-ever league title in the 1998-99 season. Further championships came in 2001-02, 2010-11 and 2018-19, giving the club four Belgian titles in total, alongside five Belgian Cups.
On the European stage, Genk have reached the Champions League group stage three times - in 2002-03, 2011-12 and 2019-20 - and have repeatedly advanced to the knockout phase of the Europa League. Notably, the club's European tradition predates the merger: in the 1981-82 UEFA Cup, Winterslag eliminated Arsenal of London, a result still remembered as one of the most memorable moments in the club's history.
Genk's colours are blue and white, giving rise to the nickname "Blauw-Wit" (Blue-White), though in Belgium the club is just as often called "De Smurfen" (The Smurfs), a nod to the colour of its kit. Genk's greatest renown, however, comes from its youth academy, regarded as one of the best in Europe, which has produced players including Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois and Leandro Trossard - now among the leading names in European football.
The club still plays at its stadium in the northern part of Genk, on the site of the former mining district, and its history remains closely tied to the transformation of the Limburg region following the closure of the coal mines.
