FC BaselFC Basel is one of the most successful and renowned football clubs in Switzerland, with a history deeply intertwined with the culture and identity of the city of Basel. The club was founded on 15 November 1893 following a newspaper notice calling for volunteers to form a football team. The traditional colors of red and blue earned them the iconic nickname RotBlau, while supporters and locals also affectionately refer to the team as Bebbi.
Although the club was a key fixture in Swiss sports from its inception, it had to wait until the 1952/1953 season to secure its first national league title. A major golden era arrived in the late 1960s and 1970s under the guidance of manager Helmut Benthaus. During this period, the team transformed into a dominant domestic force and a regular European competitor, winning seven league titles. However, the late 1980s brought a period of decline that culminated in relegation, requiring a lengthy rebuilding process before returning to the top tier.
A new era began in 2001 with the opening of St. Jakob-Park, constructed on the site of the former St. Jakob-Stadion. The stadium quickly became a fortress and the backdrop for historic achievements. The early 21st century marked an era of overwhelming domestic supremacy, highlighted by an extraordinary run of eight consecutive league championships between 2010 and 2017. In total, the club boasts 20 Swiss league titles and 14 Swiss Cups, consolidating its status among the elite of Swiss football.
A defining aspect of FC Basel is its memorable international European campaigns, where the Swiss side consistently punched above its weight against European powerhouses. In the 2002/2003 season, the team eliminated Celtic FC in the Champions League qualifiers before advancing from a group containing Liverpool FC and Valencia CF. The club reached a historical peak in the 2012/2013 season by advancing to the UEFA Europa League semi-finals, knocking out Tottenham Hotspur before eventually falling to eventual champions Chelsea FC. Over the years, world-class talents such as Xherdan Shaqiri, Granit Xhaka, Mohamed Salah, and Yann Sommer developed their skills at the club.
Today, FC Basel continues its pursuit of domestic titles and European qualification. Combining academy talent with international experience at St. Jakob-Park, the club remains a cornerstone of Swiss football culture.
