FC Basel FC Basel is one of the most successful and renowned football clubs in Switzerland, with a history deeply intertwined with the culture and identity of the city of Basel. The club was founded on 15 November 1893 following a newspaper notice calling for volunteers to form a football team. The traditional colors of red and blue earned them the iconic nickname RotBlau, while supporters and locals also affectionately refer to the team as Bebbi.
Although the club was a key fixture in Swiss sports from its inception, it had to wait until the 1952/1953 season to secure its first national league title. A major golden era arrived in the late 1960s and 1970s under the guidance of manager Helmut Benthaus. A defining aspect of FC Basel is its memorable international European campaigns, where the Swiss side consistently punched above its weight against European powerhouses. In the 2002/2003 season, the team eliminated Celtic FC in the Champions League qualifiers before advancing from a group containing Liverpool FC and Valencia CF. The club reached a historical peak in the 2012/2013 season by advancing to the UEFA Europa League semi-finals, knocking out Tottenham Hotspur before eventually falling to eventual champions Chelsea FC. Over the years, world-class talents such as Xherdan Shaqiri, Granit Xhaka, Mohamed Salah, and Yann Sommer developed their skills at the club.
