FC St. Gallen 1879 holds a unique place in football history as the oldest existing football club in continental Europe, founded on 19 April 1879. Based in eastern Switzerland, the club is affectionately nicknamed Espen (Aspen trees) and is defined by its iconic green-and-white colours.

Throughout its history in Swiss football, FC St. Gallen has captured the national championship title twice: first in 1904 and again nearly a century later in the 1999/2000 season. Their domestic honours also include winning the Swiss Cup in 1969 under manager Albert Sing.

On the European stage, the club's most celebrated result came during the 2000/01 UEFA Cup, when they secured a famous 2:0 home victory against English giants Chelsea FC in the second leg of the first round. Having moved from their historic ground, the Espenmoos, to a modern home stadium in 2008, the club has maintained a strong competitive presence in the top flight, notably shaped in recent years by German manager Peter Zeidler.
