FC Vaduz is one of the most unusual clubs in world football. Although the club represents Liechtenstein, it competes day-to-day in the Swiss league system as a so-called "guest club" (Gastverein) — a status that comes with a peculiar legal paradox: even if the team won the Swiss top-flight championship outright, it would not be crowned Swiss champions or gain the right to play in the Champions League, with that place instead going to the next-best Swiss team in the table.

The club's only route into European competition is the Liechtenstein Cup. Since the principality has no domestic league of its own, it is the regulations of this cup competition — organised annually by the national football association since 1946 — that grant the winner a place in UEFA Conference League qualifying. For the fully professional FC Vaduz, competing in the tournament against amateur sides from the lower tiers of the Swiss pyramid, and even against the reserve teams of Liechtenstein's other clubs, the cup has proven a remarkably steady source of silverware: in May 2026 the club won the trophy for the 52nd time in its history, setting a world record for the most domestic cup titles won by any club.

This unusual structure produces highly unusual scenarios — in the Liechtenstein Cup, Vaduz's first team regularly faces its own reserve side in official matches, since the competition's format allows both the first and second teams of all seven Liechtenstein clubs to enter. Despite these structural quirks, the club has repeatedly shown it can compete effectively on the European stage. In the 2022–23 season, while playing in the Swiss Challenge League, the second tier, Vaduz advanced all the way to the group stage of the UEFA Europa Conference League, eliminating Austria's Rapid Wien along the way and becoming the first-ever club from Liechtenstein to reach the group stage of a UEFA club competition.

The team plays its home matches at the Rheinpark Stadion in Vaduz, situated right beside the River Rhine, which marks the border with Switzerland, and framed by the surrounding Alpine peaks. Given the tiny population of the country as a whole, attendances for the club's biggest matches routinely represent a noticeable share of Liechtenstein's entire population.
