IF Elfsborg IF Elfsborg is a Swedish football club from BorÄs, founded on 26 June 1904 by a group of nineteen teenagers aged 14 to 15, who established the team under the name BorÄs Fotbollslag. The side, playing in distinctive yellow shirts, earned from these colours the nickname Di Gule (The Yellow Ones), while the more elaborate name Eleganterna (The Elegants) refers to the club's style of play during its finest periods.
Elfsborg has won the Swedish championship six times, with the 1961 title standing out as a particularly notable achievement, secured in the club's first season back in the top flight â a feat later matched only by Ăster IF in 1968. That success was followed, however, by difficult decades: in 1987 the club was relegated from Allsvenskan and did not return to the top tier until 1997, building its squad around players who would go on to become Swedish internationals, including Anders Svensson and Tobias Linderoth.
A turning point came in 2005, when the club, investing in a new stadium and the return of experienced former players, opened BorĂ„s Arena with a match against Ărgryte IS, won 1â0 thanks to a goal from Daniel Mobaeck â the first ever scored at the venue. The following year, in 2006, Elfsborg won its fifth national championship, its first in 41 years, and it secured its sixth and, to date, final title in 2012. The 2006 triumph earned the club its debut in the group stage of the UEFA Cup in the 2007â08 season, the furthest the team has progressed in European competition.
The club's earlier home, Ryavallen, opened on 17 August 1941, entered the club's history through its inaugural match, in which Elfsborg defeated the Swedish national team 2â1 â BorĂ„s Arena is still sometimes referred to as the Elfsborg Fortress, a reference to the team's dominance on home turf during the 2000s. The club has also remained a fixture of the top division for years, boasting one of the longest unbroken spells in the Swedish top flight of any club in the country.
