BK HäckenBK Häcken is a club that was created by teenagers. It was registered on 2 August 1940 by a group of boys aged 14 and 15 on the island of Hisingen in Gothenburg, who wanted not just to play football for fun but to build an organisation and take part in the national league system. The club is nicknamed Getingarna (The Wasps), and it plays in yellow and black. For decades it was a local team of the second tier, and its development has been gradual rather than sudden, which sets it apart from the traditional pedigree of the largest Swedish names.
The top flight came in 1983. After finishing second in 1982, Häcken beat IFK Norrköping in the promotion play-off, winning 2–0 at home at Rambergsvallen and drawing 1–1 away. It was the first time the club reached Allsvenskan, and the following decades consisted of a pattern of promotions and relegations. Its best placing of the 1990s was sixth in 1993, and the club returned permanently to the top flight in 2009. The Swedish Cup brought its first major trophy in 2016, when it beat Malmö FF in the final. In 2019 it won the competition again, beating AFC Eskilstuna 3–0 at home, and further cup successes followed, including in 2024–25.
The real turning point came in 2022, when Häcken won Allsvenskan for the first time in its history. It was the club's first Swedish championship, after which it finished third in 2023. The title gave it a place in the 2023–24 European qualifying rounds, and the first attempt was disappointing. In the Champions League qualifying the club was eliminated on penalties by Klaksvík of the Faroe Islands. It was then moved into the Europa League qualifying, and there the season took a different course.
In the third qualifying round Häcken met Žalgiris Vilnius and won 3–1 away, with Srđan Hrstić scoring twice. In the return leg at home it won 5–0, with goals from Hrstić, Samuel Gustafson, Ibrahim Sadiq (twice, one from a penalty) and Momodou Sonko. The aggregate result of 8–1 secured at least a place in the Conference League group stage. In the Europa League play-off the club then beat Aberdeen 5–3 on aggregate and reached the group stage of the Europa League for the first time in its history. It was a historic achievement for a club of this size, although the group itself proved a hard school. Häcken lost all six matches in the group won by Bayer Leverkusen, scoring three goals and conceding seventeen.
The experience of that autumn was put to use in later seasons, when the club played in the Conference League qualifying and reached the play-off round in 2024–25. In the domestic league its results have been less stable. It finished eighth in 2024 and tenth in 2025, which shows how demanding it is to remain among the leaders of Swedish football. The club's home is the modern arena built on the site of the old Rambergsvallen ground on Hisingen, with a capacity of around 6,500. The commercial name of the stadium has changed in recent years, but for supporters it remains a ground tied to the island. BK Häcken is today one of the better examples of how a club from outside the traditional circle of Swedish football can first win the league and then compete in Europe.
