GAIS

GAIS (Göteborgs Atlet- och Idrottssällskap) stands as a fundamental pillar of working-class football culture in Gothenburg, distinguished from its local rivals by a fiercely loyal supporter base and its iconic green-and-black vertically striped shirts, which earned the team its affectionate nickname Makrillarna (The Mackerels). Founded on 11 March 1894 along Storgatan, the club initially operated as a general athletics association before shifting its primary focus to football at the turn of the century. GAIS holds an immortal place in Swedish football history as a pioneer of the game and the inaugural champion of the inaugural Allsvenskan season in 1924–25.

The club's home ground is the historic Gamla Ullevi, shared with city rivals, where GAIS supporters maintain one of Sweden's most authentic matchday atmospheres. In domestic competitions, GAIS has secured 4 official Swedish national championships (in 1919, 1922, 1925, and 1954) and won the Swedish Cup (Svenska Cupen) in 1942. The most celebrated icon in the club's history is Gunnar Gren—the legendary Olympic gold medalist and member of AC Milan's famed 'Gre-No-Li' trio—who served as player-manager for GAIS, leading the club to its 1954 league championship. Other defining figures in the club's legacy include Albert Olsson, two-time Allsvenskan top scorer Karl-Alfred Jakobsson, and midfielder Tomas Gustafson.

In European competitions, GAIS featured in notable UEFA Cup campaigns. During the 1975–76 UEFA Cup, the team achieved a memorable 2–1 home victory over Polish side Śląsk Wrocław. In the 1990–91 UEFA Cup campaign, GAIS earned a hard-fought 1–1 draw at home against Torpedo Moscow.

Following periods of rebuilding through the lower tiers of Swedish football, GAIS returned to the top-flight Allsvenskan, restoring the iconic Gothenburg derbies to the national stage while honoring its century-old heritage as a four-time national champion.
