Śląsk WrocławŚląsk Wrocław hold a unique place in Polish football history as a club born from the merger of two military academy teams in the years immediately after the Second World War. The club was formed in 1947 through the union of Pionier Wrocław, founded a year earlier at the Officers' Sapper School relocated from Przemyśl, and Podchorążak, a section attached to the Officers' Infantry School. This military heritage is the origin of the club's enduring nickname, the Wojskowi (the Militarians).
Śląsk's finest era came in the second half of the 1970s. Led by coach Władysław Żmuda (the elder), the side won their first Polish Cup in 1976, beating Stal Mielec 2-0 in the final, before claiming their first ever Polish championship the following year, in 1977. That 1976/77 season also brought the club's greatest European achievement: in the Cup Winners' Cup, Śląsk reached the quarter-finals, eliminated only by Italy's SSC Napoli. That generation's standout player was Władysław Żmuda, a two-time World Cup medallist for Poland, alongside Janusz Sybis, the club's all-time leading goalscorer.
Śląsk's second league title did not arrive until 2012, after two decades of waiting and a spell in the second division around the turn of the millennium. The club also won a second Polish Cup in 1987, defeating GKS Katowice on penalties in the final in Opole, and lifted the Polish Super Cup a few months later. Known for their green-white-and-red colours, the team plays at the stadium built for Euro 2012 on Śląska Avenue, one of the largest and most modern football venues in Poland.
