Pogoń SzczecinPogoń Szczecin is a club whose history is inseparable from Szczecin and the port-city character of the region. The modern club was founded on 21 April 1948 as KS Sztorm, initially with football and boxing sections. The organisation subsequently went through several changes. In 1950, KS Kolejarz Szczecin was established, and in autumn 1955 the club adopted the name Pogoń, referring to the tradition of pre-war Pogoń Lwów. In 1958, the Szczecin side reached the top division for the first time, beginning a long association with Poland's highest level of football.
One of the most important figures in the club's early history was Florian Krygier. His work was closely connected with Pogoń's development during the 1950s and beyond, particularly its emphasis on youth development. In 1957, the team under his leadership earned promotion to the second tier, and a year later reached the first division. Krygier remained a symbol of the club's organisational and coaching tradition for decades, and Pogoń's home stadium now bears his name.
The club's first major league achievement came in 1984, when Pogoń Szczecin won the bronze medal in the Polish championship. It was the first top-flight medal in the club's history. Three years later, the Portmen achieved their best league finish at the time, ending the 1986/87 season as runners-up. They repeated that result in 2000/01. Pogoń have never won the Polish championship, but two runners-up finishes and several other high league positions established the club among Poland's leading sides over different periods.
The club reached the Polish Cup final four times before 2025, in 1981, 1982, 2010 and 2024, but lost each decisive match. The 2024 final was particularly painful. Pogoń led Wisła Kraków 1–0 after a goal from Efthymis Koulouris, but conceded twice in extra time and lost 1–2. In 2025, the Szczecin side reached the final again, this time against Legia Warsaw. The match ended 4–3 to Legia, giving Pogoń another defeat in a Polish Cup final. As a result, the club remains without either a Polish championship or a Polish Cup triumph.
Pogoń's European history goes back to 1965, when the club made its debut in the Intertoto Cup. The Szczecin side defeated NK Zagreb 3–0 at home. Its first official appearance in a UEFA club competition came in the 1984/85 season, when Pogoń faced 1. FC Köln in the first round of the UEFA Cup. The German side won both matches, but the tie represented an important milestone and Pogoń's first European confrontation with an opponent of that stature.
In the 21st century, Pogoń returned to regular participation in European qualifying rounds. The club made its debut in the UEFA Conference League in 2021/22 and subsequently returned to the competition's qualifying stages. In 2023/24, Pogoń reached the third qualifying round after eliminating Linfield FC, before being knocked out by Belgian side KAA Gent. European football has consequently become an important part of the club's modern identity, although Pogoń have yet to reach the main phase of a UEFA club competition.
The identity of Pogoń is strongly connected with Szczecin. The club plays in its traditional navy blue and burgundy colours, while the nickname Portowcy, or the Portmen, reflects the city's maritime heritage. The club crest features a griffin, one of the principal symbols of Szczecin and West Pomerania. Home matches are played at Stadion Miejski im. Floriana Krygiera, on Twardowskiego Street, which is also an important part of the club's wider football infrastructure.
Youth development has a particularly important place in Pogoń's tradition. The club has maintained its own development structures for decades, with Florian Krygier remaining an important symbol of this philosophy. Among the players associated with Pogoń is Kamil Grosicki, a product of the club's youth system and later a Poland international who became one of the most recognisable figures of the Szczecin side's modern era. Pogoń remains one of the leading clubs in West Pomerania, combining a strong local identity with a long presence in Poland's top division, a significant youth tradition and repeated appearances in European qualifying competitions.
