IFK Göteborg is the only club from the Nordic countries to have won the UEFA Cup twice - in 1982 and 1987. The club was founded on 4 October 1904 in Gothenburg, and its blue-and-white colours gave rise to the popular nickname Blåvitt.

The first European triumph, in the 1981-82 season, became one of the most celebrated events in Swedish football history. Led by a young Sven-Göran Eriksson, a squad made up largely of part-time players beat Hamburger SV 4-0 on aggregate (1-0 and 3-0) in the two-legged final, claiming the first European trophy ever won by a Swedish club. That same year IFK Göteborg also won the Swedish championship and the domestic cup, completing a treble.

The second European crown came five years later, when IFK Göteborg beat Scotland's Dundee United 2-1 on aggregate in the 1986-87 UEFA Cup final. A year earlier, in the 1985-86 season, the club had also reached the semi-finals of the European Cup, still its best-ever result in the continent's most prestigious competition.

Domestically the club has won 18 Swedish championship titles, the second most in the country's history behind Malmö FF, and has played in the top-flight Allsvenskan continuously since 1977, the longest such run of any Swedish club. Its honours also include numerous victories in the Svenska Cupen, the national cup.

IFK Göteborg plays its home matches at Gamla Ullevi in its home city. The club remains one of the most popular in Sweden, and its history - from humble working-class origins to two European triumphs - still serves as a benchmark for Swedish football as a whole.
