For most of its history, Mjällby AIF was known, if at all, as a small club from a fishing village of around 1,500 people on Sweden's Baltic coast, spending decades shuttling through the country's regional leagues before reaching Allsvenskan for the first time only in 1980. Founded on 1 April 1939 through the merger of Listers IF and Hälleviks IF, the club represents Hällevik, in Sölvesborg Municipality, and remains the most successful football team ever to come from the province of Blekinge.

Mjällby's fortunes changed dramatically in the 2020s. After winning promotion via the Superettan title in 2019 and gradually establishing itself in the top flight, the club reached its first Swedish Cup final in 2023, losing 4-1 to BK Häcken. Built around a policy of long-term recruitment and a strong working culture rather than financial firepower, the team from Hällevik then produced one of the most remarkable campaigns in Allsvenskan history in 2025, securing the title with three matches still to play, finishing 13 points clear of the field, losing only once all season and setting a new league record of 75 points, to become Swedish champions for the first time.

The achievement was completed in May 2026, when Mjällby beat Hammarby IF 2-1 in the Svenska Cupen final at Friends Arena in Solna to win the club's first Swedish Cup and complete a domestic double. The league title also secured Mjällby's first-ever entry into UEFA competition, with the club's own Strandvallen ground approved by UEFA to host its debut European fixtures.

Mjällby's academy has long punched above the club's size, producing Swedish internationals Christian Wilhelmsson and Mattias Asper, both of whom began and ended their playing careers at the club. Playing in yellow and black and based at Strandvallen, their intimate home ground by the Baltic Sea since 1953, Mjällby AIF continues to build its squad around a mix of homegrown academy talent and locally rooted players, a model that turned one of Swedish football's smallest clubs into its most talked-about story.
