The club's international profile changed after Gibraltar's football association joined UEFA and local teams were allowed to enter European qualifying competitions. In 2016, Lincoln Red Imps produced one of the most memorable results in the territory's sporting history by beating Celtic 1-0 at home in a UEFA Champions League qualifying tie. The victory over the Scottish champions, managed by Brendan Rodgers, was secured in front of a home crowd and briefly placed Gibraltar at the centre of European football. Celtic won the return match, but the result permanently altered perceptions of Lincoln and its country's football. The next major milestone came in the 2021/22 season, when Lincoln became the first club from Gibraltar to reach the group stage of a major UEFA competition, appearing in the Europa Conference League.
