Europa FC is one of the historic names in Gibraltarian football, with the Gibraltar Football Association dating the club's foundation to 1925. Its history spans several distinct eras, from the early decades of organised football on the Rock to its emergence as a regular representative of Gibraltar in UEFA competitions. The club is traditionally associated with green and black, colours that have remained an important part of its visual identity.

Europa established itself as a major force in Gibraltar's domestic game during the first half of the 20th century. The club won its first league championship in 1929 and added further titles in 1930, 1932, 1933, 1938, 1952 and 2017, giving it seven Gibraltar league championships. The long gap between the 1952 and 2017 triumphs is one of the defining features of the club's history. After more than six decades without a league title, Europa returned to the top in 2016/17 and ended Lincoln Red Imps' run of 14 consecutive championships. UEFA described the achievement as Europa's first league title in more than 65 years.

The Rock Cup has also played an important role in Europa's history. The club's first recorded triumph came in 1938, followed by further victories in 1946, 1950, 1951 and 1952. The trophy returned to Europa in the modern era, with victories in 2017, 2018 and 2019. The 2017 final was particularly notable: Europa defeated Lincoln Red Imps 3–0, completing a domestic double after securing the league championship. The club therefore entered a period in which it was regularly competing for the major trophies in Gibraltar.

Europa's rise coincided with Gibraltar's integration into UEFA competitions, giving the club a new international dimension. In 2014, Europa became the first Gibraltar club to play in the UEFA Europa League. Its debut came against FC Vaduz of Liechtenstein, although the tie ended in a 4–0 aggregate defeat. A year later, Europa faced Slovan Bratislava in the competition. The club recorded its first European victory in the 2016/17 Europa League, beating Armenia's Pyunik 2–0 at home before progressing on away goals despite a 1–2 defeat in the return match. Europa subsequently faced AIK of Sweden in the second qualifying round.

The club continued to appear in UEFA competitions during the following years. Europa reached the preliminary round of the Europa League in 2018/19, where it faced FC Prishtina. The first match in Gibraltar ended 1–1, but Prishtina won the return leg 5–0. Europa also competed in the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League in 2021, reflecting the broader opportunities created by the expansion of European club competitions.

The club's European history is closely connected with the development of football in Gibraltar itself. Europa were among the Gibraltar representatives in UEFA competitions at a time when clubs from the territory were gaining regular access to international competition. Their appearances provided experience against opponents from Liechtenstein, Slovakia, Armenia, Sweden and Kosovo and helped establish Europa as one of Gibraltar's recurring representatives on the European stage.

For many decades, the Victoria Stadium has been central to football in Gibraltar and has served as the setting for Europa's domestic and European matches. The club has also been associated with Europa Point Stadium, which has become another important football venue on the Rock. Europa's identity, however, extends beyond its grounds: its long history, green-and-black colours and seven league championships place it firmly among the established institutions of Gibraltarian football.

The significance of Europa FC lies particularly in the contrast between its long historical tradition and the long wait for renewed domestic success. The 2017 championship ended a 65-year league drought and was followed by a period in which Europa regularly challenged for major honours and represented Gibraltar abroad. Combined with its historic Rock Cup record and pioneering role in European competition, this makes Europa one of the most distinctive clubs in the football history of Gibraltar.
