Liechtenstein

The Football Association of Liechtenstein (LFV) occupies a unique place on the football map. It is the only one among UEFA's 55 member associations that does not have its own domestic league. This situation creates a series of footballing anomalies unseen in any other European country.

Swiss "Guests"

There are only 7 official football clubs in Liechtenstein (including FC Vaduz, USV Eschen/Mauren, and FC Balzers). Due to the lack of a domestic league competition, all of these teams compete in the Swiss league system under a special agreement.

However, they hold the status of guest clubs (Gastvereine):

• No European qualification through Switzerland: Even if FC Vaduz were to win the Swiss Super League, they would not receive the Champions League spot allocated to Switzerland — the qualification spot would pass to the highest-ranked Swiss team.
• Ineligibility for the Swiss Cup: Teams from Liechtenstein are not allowed to participate in the Swiss national cup.

The Principality Cup — The Only Route to Europe

Because there is no domestic league, the only official national competition is the Liechtenstein Cup (Liechtensteiner Cup). It operates under unique rules:

• Competition entries include not only first teams but also their reserve sides (e.g., FC Vaduz II), which sometimes leads to matches between different squads of the same club.
• The tournament winner receives Liechtenstein's sole berth in UEFA competitions — a place in the UEFA Conference League qualifiers.

Record-Breaking FC Vaduz and the Champions League Ceiling

The country's biggest club is FC Vaduz, whose dominance in the domestic cup earned them a place in the Guinness World Records. Having won the cup over 50 times, they are the most successful club in the history of any domestic cup competition worldwide.

The lack of a league system also creates a structural ceiling. A club from Liechtenstein has no direct path to the Champions League. The only theoretical way to play in the Champions League would be to win the Liechtenstein Cup, win the Conference League, and then win the Europa League in the following season.
