The golden era of Cercle Brugge spanned the first three decades of the 20th century, during which the club secured three Belgian top-flight league titles in 1911, 1927, and 1930. Key figures of this golden age included Hector Goetinck, widely regarded as one of the earliest iconic figures in Belgian football, and goalkeeper Emile Hanse. In addition to its league triumphs, the club captured the Belgian Cup twice, first completing a league and cup double in 1927, and winning it again in 1985. The 1985 triumph heralded a strong period featuring Zambian star Kalusha Bwalya, who became a central offensive figure for the team in the late 1980s.
On the European stage, one of the club's notable campaigns occurred during the 1985–86 European Cup Winners' Cup. In the first round, the Belgian side faced Portuguese club Boavista. In the home leg in Bruges, Cercle Brugge secured a memorable 3–2 victory, with goals scored by Paul Courant, Geert Broeckaert, and Kalusha Bwalya. Although Boavista advanced on aggregate after the return fixture in Porto, the victory in Bruges remains a cherished highlight in the club's continental history.
The team plays its home matches at the Jan Breydelstadion, a municipal venue named after the 14th-century hero of Bruges, which it shares with city rivals. A significant modern turning point occurred in 2017 when French club AS Monaco acquired a majority stake in the organization. This partnership reshaped Cercle Brugge into a prominent platform for youth development while maintaining its century-old identity within the Belgian Pro League.
