Founded on 10 August 1899, the club quickly established itself as the sporting pride of the Rogaland region. The club won its first national honours before the Second World War, but true domestic dominance arrived in the post-war decades — first with the club's inaugural Norwegian championship in 1958, and then in the 1970s, when, guided by manager Kjell Schou-Andreassen, who took charge in 1972, the dark-blues achieved an extraordinary feat by winning four consecutive Norwegian league titles between 1972 and 1975, a run of dominance still rare in the history of Norwegian football. Further league triumphs followed in 1979, 1982 and 1991, and the club's most recent, ninth title, came in the 2025 season. In total, the club now boasts 9 Norwegian Eliteserien league titles and 6 Norwegian Cups, won in 1953, 1959, 1979, 1989, 2001 and 2019.
A significant milestone in the modern history of the club occurred in 2004, when the team transitioned from its historic Stavanger Stadion to a new purpose-built home in the Jåttåvågen district, historically known as Viking Stadion, which provided state-of-the-art facilities and consistently high attendance figures, consolidating the club's status as a regional powerhouse.
On the European stage, Viking FK produced one of the most memorable shocks in Norwegian football history. During the 2002/03 UEFA Cup first round, having lost the first leg 1-2 at Stamford Bridge, the team sensationally turned the tie around at home, beating English giants Chelsea FC 4-2 — with goals from Morten Berre and a brace from Erik Nevland, the latter's winner coming three minutes from time — to progress 5-4 on aggregate. Three years earlier, in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup, Viking had also eliminated Sporting CP, then Portugal's leading club. Over the decades, the club has also served as a launchpad for top international talent, including defenders like Brede Hangeland and midfielder Valon Berisha.
Today, Viking FK remains a dominant force in the Eliteserien, routinely challenging for top-three finishes and European qualification. Operating on a foundation of strong academy recruitment and passionate supporter culture, the club continues to build on its rich heritage.
