Breiðablik KópavogurA world-class youth academy and a philosophy centered on player development serve as the cornerstone of Breiðablik UBK, a multi-sport club based in Kópavogur, Iceland's second-largest municipality. Established on 12 April 1950, the club's football section gradually evolved into the country's primary talent pipeline. Traditionally sporting green shirts, the team is affectionately known as Blikar, built upon a firm tradition of nurturing homegrown players.
While the club spent much of its early history moving between the top two divisions, the turn of the 21st century sparked an unprecedented rise to domestic prominence. The club claimed its first major silverware in 2009 by winning the Icelandic Cup (Bikar karla). This triumph paved the way for a golden era: in 2010, Breiðablik UBK secured its maiden top-flight league championship (Besta deild karla), a feat repeated in the 2022 season. In total, the club holds 2 Icelandic league titles, 1 Icelandic Cup, and 2 Icelandic League Cups.
The team hosts its home fixtures at Kópavogsvöllur, an artificial-turf venue integrated into a comprehensive sports complex in Kópavogur. The stadium has served as the fortress for the club's historic achievements both domestically and in continental competition.
On the international stage, Breiðablik UBK etched its name into national sports history during the 2023/2024 season by becoming the first Icelandic club ever to reach the group stage of a major UEFA competition, competing in the UEFA Europa Conference League group stage against sides like KAA Gent, Maccabi Tel Aviv, and Zorya Luhansk. A decade earlier, in the 2013/2014 UEFA Europa League qualifiers, the club achieved another memorable feat by eliminating Austrian side SK Sturm Graz on penalties. The club's academy has produced some of Iceland's greatest footballers, including Gylfi Sigurðsson, Johann Berg Guðmundsson, and Alfred Finnbogason.
Today, Breiðablik UBK remains a benchmark for sustainable club development in Nordic football, combining an attractive attacking playstyle at Kópavogsvöllur with continuous representation in European tournaments.
