Sabah FK stands as one of the fastest success stories in modern club football, rising from foundation to national championship in under nine years. Formed on 8 September 2017 in Masazır, near Baku, the club was granted a top-flight license only a year later after several clubs above them in the second tier failed or declined promotion. Fans know the team as "Bayquşlar" (The Owls), though it is also referred to as "Tələbələr" (The Students) and "Qara-çəhrayılar" (The Black-pinks).

The triumph ended the long-standing hegemony of Qarabağ, twelve-time national champions and four-time defending champions heading into that season.

The key to that rise was a carefully judged transfer policy combining experienced foreign players, such as Akim Zedadka and Pavol Šafranko, with talented young Azerbaijanis, backed by stable financing and modern club infrastructure. Sabah play their home matches at the Bank Respublika Arena in Masazır, holding just under 9,000 spectators.
