The Bank Respublika Arena in Baku hosts a first-ever competitive meeting between Sabah FK and Slavia Praha in Matchday 2 of the Champions League league phase.
Founded in 2017, Sabah are making their debut in the Champions League league phase after a dramatic play-off victory over Hapoel Beer-Sheva. The Azerbaijani champions overturned a 2-1 first-leg deficit by winning the return match 5-2 after extra time, securing a historic place in the competition proper. Under Lithuanian coach Valdas Dambrauskas, Sabah completed a domestic double last season by winning both the Azerbaijani Premier League and the national cup.
Serbian forward Veljko Simić has been one of the key figures in Sabah's European campaign. He finished as the top scorer in Champions League qualifying with six goals, while Joy-Lance Mickels also played an important attacking role. Sabah subsequently began the league phase with a heavy defeat away to Manchester United, making the home fixture against Slavia an opportunity to claim their first points in the competition.
Slavia Praha, by contrast, bring considerably more experience of European football to the fixture. The Czech champions have regularly competed in UEFA competitions in recent seasons and also began this league phase with a narrow 3-2 home defeat to Lens.
