Sumgayit FC Sumgayit FK is an Azerbaijani football club founded in 2010 in the industrial city of Sumgayit, located on the Caspian Sea just outside Baku. As early as May 2011, the team was promoted to the Azerbaijan Premier League, the country's top flight, after receiving a wildcard place in place of the dissolved club Absheron. Briefly, in 2011, the side competed under the name Gənclərbirliyi Sumqayıt, but the club's original name was restored as early as January 2012.
The team is nicknamed Kimyaçılar (The Chemists), a reference to the chemical industry tradition around which the city of Sumgayit grew during the Soviet era. After earning promotion to the top flight, the club built its squad mainly around young players from Azerbaijan's under-17 and under-19 national teams, favouring home-grown development over costly foreign transfers from the outset. This philosophy reached its high point in the 2017–18 season, when Sumgayit was the only club in the league whose entire squad consisted of Azerbaijani players — a rarity in a heavily internationalised domestic league.
The team plays its home matches at the Kapital Bank Arena in Sumgayit. Over its history to date, the club has not won any league title or domestic cup, but the 2021–22 season brought a historic milestone: its European debut. Sumgayit qualified for the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa Conference League, where it faced Serbia's Čukarički, concluding its first foray into continental competition.
The club has been led for years by chairman Riad Rafiyev, and its structure also includes a reserve team, Sumgayit-2, founded in 2018 and competing in the country's reserve league. Although Sumgayit FK cannot boast a rich tradition or trophies, its consistent presence in the top flight for more than a decade makes it one of the more stable clubs in contemporary Azerbaijani football.
