Zalaegerszegi TE are a club whose present blue-and-white colours are, in fact, inherited from an entirely different team. The club's history dates back to the early twentieth century, with the formal founding of Zalaegerszegi Torna Egylet taking place in 1920, though some archival sources suggest it may have actually occurred a year later. The team originally played in green and white, and it was only in 1978, following a merger with the local club Zalaegerszegi Építők, that it adopted the blue-and-white colours it is known for today, inherited directly from its merger partner.
After decades spent in the shadow of Hungarian football's elite, preceded by promotion to the top division in 1934 and again in the 1990s, the club wrote the most important chapter in its history during the 2001/02 season. Led by coach Péter Bozsik, ZTE lost just two home matches throughout the entire campaign, and clinched the championship in round 37 with a 1-1 draw against Ferencváros, which, given their five-point lead, made it mathematically impossible for their rival to catch up. It was the club's first-ever Hungarian championship, and it earned ZTE a debut appearance in UEFA Champions League qualifying the following season. Fans had to wait more than two decades for the club's next major trophy - in 2023, ZTE won the Hungarian Cup, confirming a return to the country's top tier after years spent in the lower divisions.
The team, known as Zete, play their home matches at ZTE Aréna in Zalaegerszeg, a stadium that can hold more than eleven thousand supporters. The club represents the western part of Hungary and remains one of the few sides from outside Budapest to have broken the capital clubs' dominance of domestic competition, cultivating a strong sense of regional identity among its local supporter community in the process.
