Debreceni VSC Debreceni VSC is a Hungarian football club founded on 12 March 1902 in Debrecen, initially under the name Egyetértés Futball Club, before adopting a name tied to the Hungarian railways in 1912 - the origin of the club's popular nickname, Loki. The team first reached the top division only in the 1943-44 season, and was relegated repeatedly over the following decades before entering the most successful period in its history at the turn of the 21st century.
The club's first trophy came in 1999, when it won the Hungarian Cup, a success it repeated in 2001. The real breakthrough, however, came in the 2004-05 season, when Debreceni VSC won the Hungarian championship for the first time in its 103-year history. Over the following decade the club built a genuine dynasty, winning a total of seven league titles - in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2014 - the first such run by a club from outside Budapest. Its honours from that period also include six Hungarian Cups and five Super Cups.
In the 2009-10 season, under manager András Herczeg, the club made history by reaching the group stage of the UEFA Champions League - still the only such achievement by a Hungarian club from outside the capital. Despite losing all six matches against Liverpool, Olympique Lyon and Fiorentina, fans were treated to live matches against some of Europe's biggest clubs. The following year the team reached the group stage of the Europa League, beating Sampdoria 2-0 along the way.
The modern era of the club is symbolised by Balázs Dzsudzsák, a longtime Hungary national team captain and academy graduate who made over 500 appearances for the club across two separate spells. Midfielder Péter Szakály also featured prominently, making more than 200 appearances for the side.
Since 1 May 2014, Debreceni VSC has played its home matches at the 20,340-capacity Nagyerdei Stadion, which replaced the club's previous ground on Oláh Gábor Street. Structurally, the club continues to rely on its youth academy, DVLA, which consistently supplies players to the first team and to Hungary's youth national squads.
