Rapid ViennaSK Rapid Wien is one of the foundational institutions of Austrian football and the country's record champion. The club's roots reach back to 1897, when the 1. Wiener Arbeiter Fußball-Club was established. On 8 January 1899, the organisation adopted the name Sportklub Rapid, the date traditionally regarded as the foundation of the modern club. Rapid is therefore one of Austria's oldest football clubs and has been closely associated with Vienna's Hütteldorf district for more than a century.
The green-and-white identity that defines Rapid today was adopted in 1906, replacing the club's original blue-and-red colours. The nickname Die Grün-Weißen reflects this tradition, while the club's supporters are an equally important part of its identity. Rapid has long been regarded as one of Austria's best-supported football clubs, with the Block West at the Allianz Stadion serving as the centre of its organised support. The famous Rapid-Viertelstunde is another distinctive tradition: during the final fifteen minutes of matches, supporters traditionally maintain a continuous rhythm of applause and chanting, creating one of the most recognisable rituals in Austrian football.
Rapid's domestic record is exceptional. The club has won 32 Austrian league championships, more than any other Austrian side. Its first national title came in the 1911/12 season, and Rapid remained a dominant force for much of the first half of the 20th century. A particularly productive period followed after the Second World War, while further championships came during the 1960s, 1980s and 1990s. The most recent league title was won in 2007/08. Rapid has also won the Austrian Cup 14 times, with the latest triumph coming in 1994/95, and has claimed the Austrian Super Cup three times.
The club's historical importance extends beyond domestic competition. In 1930, Rapid won the Mitropa Cup, one of the most prestigious international club tournaments in Central Europe before the establishment of the modern European competitions. The team defeated Sparta Prague in the final and combined the continental triumph with the Austrian championship, producing one of the outstanding seasons in the club's history.
Rapid has also twice reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup. In 1985, the Viennese side reached the final after a memorable quarter-final comeback against Dynamo Dresden, overturning a 3–0 first-leg deficit with a 5–0 victory in the return match. Rapid eventually lost the final 3–1 to Everton. Eleven years later, the club returned to the final, this time losing 1–0 to Paris Saint-Germain. These two campaigns remain the closest Rapid has come to winning a major UEFA club competition.
The club's European history also includes a memorable result in the European Cup in 1982, when Rapid defeated Avenir Beggen 8–0 at home after winning the first leg 5–0 in Luxembourg. In the modern era, Rapid have remained regular participants in UEFA competitions, including the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League qualifying and group stages.
A central figure in the club's long history is Ernst Happel, one of Austria's most influential football figures, who played for Rapid before later becoming a highly successful coach. Among the club's celebrated players are also Hans Krankl, Austria's 1978 World Cup Golden Boot winner, and Steffen Hofmann, who became one of Rapid's defining modern-era players and later served the club in several roles. Their careers reflect the strong connection between Rapid and Austrian football's broader history.
Rapid has been based in Hütteldorf for more than a century, first playing at the legendary Pfarrwiese before moving to the nearby Weststadion in 1977. The stadium was later renamed the Gerhard-Hanappi-Stadion in honour of the former Rapid player and architect. Since 2016, the club has played its home matches at the Allianz Stadion, built on the same Hütteldorf site and with a capacity of around 28,500 spectators for football.
The club's greatest domestic rivalry is with FK Austria Wien. The Vienna Derby is one of the oldest and most important rivalries in Austrian football, bringing together two clubs with contrasting identities but similarly deep roots in the capital. More than a century of meetings have made the fixture a defining part of Vienna's sporting culture. With its record 32 championships, long European tradition, distinctive supporter culture and enduring place in Hütteldorf, SK Rapid Wien remains one of the central clubs in the history of Austrian football.
