The Austrian visitors took the lead in the 30th minute when Serge-Philippe Raux-Yao headed home from a Matthias Seidl assist. Rapid's defender then became the unlikely protagonist at both ends of the pitch, scoring an own goal in the 56th minute to bring Hearts level. Just six minutes later, James Wilson completed the turnaround with a long-range effort assisted by Cláudio Braga. Rapid refused to give up and Nikolaus Wurmbrand restored parity in the 79th minute after a pass from Nicolas Bajlicz. Neither side could find a winner in the closing stages, leaving the tie finely balanced ahead of the second leg in Vienna.
